Celebrity status?
« on: September 03, 2013, 12:05:56 PM »
There was until very recently a 1980 R65 for sale on ebay that was reported to be previously owned by Steve Wozniak of Apple Computer fame and with a foolishly-inflated minimum asking price.   Folks who are members of the airheads email list have seen some discussion on this the past several days.   It was also funny in that an ebay member had asked the seller if the bike had also previosuly been owned by actor John Voight (a reference to Seinfeld show's character Goerge Costanza who bought a ridiculously overpriced Chrysler LeBaron convertible because he was told it had been previously owned by  the actor).   The ebay seller didn't seem to get the comedic jab ...

Apparently, this isn't limited to standard bikes either -  I freely admit that another ebay seller has built a very nice conversion with an R80 powerplant on a /2 platform, but I would hardly consider it worth more than 1/2 the seller's asking price, regardless of whose butt has been on it... Sean Penn's or otherwise:

So my question for general interest discussion here is - is there any motorcycle (not talking about truly rare and collectible ones like a Vincent Black Shadow or Mike Hailwood's first racebike) that you would pay big bucks for, simply because of its previous ownership/provenance?

If I win the lottery, and if I could find it, and if they would sell it I would pay big bucks for the motorcycle Steve McQueen rode in "The Great Escape".

I would even pay big bucks for Burt Munro's Indian Scout but all three of the if's would have to be involved.
Keep your bike in good repair: motorcycle boots are not comfortable for walking.

Munro's bike would certainly be a very rare, customized bird, so I wouldn't doubt that it would be highly collectible and priced accordingly.  Although they used (2)  different bikes in the Great Escape film, Aside from the fact that they would be very antique, I don't know that they'd be special except for that movie/rider.

How about the H-D sportster in "Along Came Bronson"?

Just moved to Nashville and I keep an eye on craigslist out of curiosity to gauge the airhead market.   Found a R75/6 that was advertised as having been owned (at one time) by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys rock band.  It was in good shape, but thought the price was jacked up by a grand or two.  Damn if that bike didn't go in less than a week.

I wouldn't pay very big bucks for it, but I wouldn't mind having my dead older half brother's 1960 or so Sportster.  No way to identify it if I did find it though.

How about the H-D sportster in "Along Came Bronson"?

Then Came Bronson (1969-70) staring Michael Parks.

There's an entire Bronson Bike cult 'out there'. Repop Sportsters custom built right down to the last detail. Wasn't there an Eye of Providence on the fuel tank? Anyway, I'll bet there's several "claimed" originals around... right down to the phony VIN numbers.

Bronson replica at 2010 Barber Vintage days

One episode had Bronson entering a hill climb competition. Off he goes, roaring up the hill, spewing dirt off his knobby tires -knobby tires?. Haf a mo... the lads on a HD Aermacchi Sprint. Oh well...

Driver: "Taking a trip?"
Bronson: "What's that?"
Driver: "Taking a trip?"
Bronson: "Yeah."
Driver: "Where to?"
Bronson: "Oh, I don't know. Wherever I end up, I guess."
Driver: "Man, I wish I was you."
Bronson: "Really?"
Driver: "Yeah."
Bronson: "Well, hang in there."
