Another new member :)
« on: March 04, 2013, 09:59:15 AM »
Hi Guys, just another new member here introducing myself. Just a quick bit about me, I'm 29, been riding since I was 17, had a number of bikes, onto number 5 now which isn't too bad in 22 years.

As you may have guessed number 5 is a R65 a 1984 RT model that I purchased as an unfinished project. Although unfinished makes it sound much worse than it is, really all thats left is some wiring work, fitting a speedo, mirrors, indicators and some cosmetic bits and bobs. Then a good service.

I basically joined the forum to tap into your collective knowledge to get these last few tasks completed and get the bike ready for summer.

I'll attach some pics.

So nice to meet you all and I hope I don't frustrate too many of you with my questions :)

Is "The Rev Light" a user? I have some plans for this one yet, I want to put a two up seat on it, change the head light and take the engine back to silver / chrome.

First things first though, get it up and running for summer or the misses will kill me. Was one of the conditions of buying her - the bike not the misses.

The "rev light" is our member Steve Hawkins he rides a red R65 cafe racer, you may have seen the bike as i believe he is from Swindon too.
The "rev light" refers to a er, how can i put this,a miss understanding of the instruments on our bikes.

Yes,

I am indeed from the much maligned Swindon Town.

Looks like an interesting project.

What part of Swindon are you from?

I reside in Eldene, in the SE corner.

My bike is also not standard......

Cheers

Thanks for all the responses guys, regards the bike; I've been on stock bikes from the beginning but always lusted after the older custom bikes.

Rev: I moved to Swindon about a year and a half ago, started up freelance. I'm living in old town, just off Eastcott Hill.

Since I work from home I now have no need for a daily rider, so away with the 1998 GSXR 750 - which is for sale if anyones interested ;) - and I took the plunge on a project bike. As its my first I was keeping an eye out for something that had the majority of work done so I could get my feet wet without drowning.

So this weekend I'll be heading under the tank thanks to your advice from another thread. First job, test and label all the wires to see where I stand.

I pass the top of Eascott hill on the way to and from work every morning, as I cross town from east to west.

Just in case you have not seen it, my bike is being converted from a cafe racer to a flat tracker style much like you own.

I just got my new saddle back from the upholsterers and am about to try and fit it.  Then MOT time.

I have a yellow/orange R100 as well.

Cheers

Looking really nice Steve, where did you get your custom seat from and how much did it cost you? I need to get one made for mine so I can get the misses on it.

Also what speedo are you using for it?

You realise you've become my go to guy now, I apologise for that in advance.

Seat - Cobra Leathers in Swindon.

You had better see mine first.

4 week turn around £95.

Speedo - is something called a Panoram.  It a large bike speedo.

But there are others - probably better as they have idiot lights and rev counters, etc. Google Trail tech or Acewell(?)  £100 should see you sorted.

cheers

Can't help you there Steve, it was on the bike when I bought it. Just sent across an email to Cobra leathers, see what kind of seats that can do for mine.

How do you find riding without the idiot lights, to be honest the only ones that concern me are the petrol low light and the indicators. Speaking of, where have you mounted your front indicators?

What indicators? I have none.  Which in retrospect, was not such a clever move.

What Petrol Low light?  Wait till she start to stutter and switch to reserve - then go find a garage : )

I have seperate bulbs for each light from the original Rev Counter and speedo.

I have oil pressure light, high beam, neutral and charging light.  Thats all your going to get as well : )

Cheers

Wow thats a good looking head unit, im guessing thats a custom jobbie? Something you made or do you have a guy you go to? Did you do away with the standard speedo cable then? I've still got mine tied off on the top tube.

Would I be right in saying yours comes with its own measuring method? How was it to configure?
