R65 CENTER STAND REMOVAL
« on: April 27, 2008, 11:28:17 AM »
Attempted removal of centerstand on 1983 r65.  Stock bolts back out, hit sump.  Loosened engine mount nuts, bolts from centerstnd still hit sump.  Didn't want to start prying on frame/engine.  Does oil sump and or engine need to be removed to remove centerstand?

It sounds like the bolts are too long, I've had my center stand off numerous times, and never ran into a problem with getting the bolts out.

So to answer your question, no you should not have to remove anything else to get them out.

If the bolts are PO replacement items that are too long, perhaps a die grinder and a cutoff wheel could get them out sans pulling the engine. Wonder how the bolts were installed in the first place? Get some new, correct length bolts and reinstall your centerstand "factory". [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I agree with the cut-off idea.  To jack the rear of the engine, you would have to disconnect the drive shaft, and remove the airbox and who knows what else.

If they are not stock bolts, your centerstand may not be working right.
The originals bolts have a tapered head, if I remember correctly.
I do know they have an allen-type head.

Do the bolts on your bike match this description?

Did you have to cut-off an allen wrench (key) to fit the confines of the work area?

Used a cut off allen wrench for bolts holding centerstand.  Bolts had non-stock locknuts - perhaps an indicaton of non-stock bolts.  Anyone know correct length of bolts should be?  What a hassle.

Microfiche (item 7) shows M10x30.  That would be 30mm long (threads only?).

Cut-off allen key is proper and locknuts are a "proper" deviation from factory as these tend to loosen up and fall out on their own with the factory fasteners.

What a hassle.

This is a 25 year-old machine that has seen AT LEAST one previous owner.

There are going to be issues.

The puzzle to me is how a centerstand with a sheet metal folded tab and square grooved foot pedal ended up on bike.  Is a centerstand design incorporating a curved circular section ball ended foot tab with no foot pedal correct for 1983?

No, the one you describe with the "curved" section was on the "first gen" R65s.  My wife's '84 also has the sheet-metal "tang".  Regardless of what style "tang" you have they were not designed to be stomped on, you are supposed to step down on what I think you are describing as the "square grooved foot pedal".

On mine (and all airheads, AFAIK), you only use the protruding part to lower the stand to the ground.

After it is deployed, you move your foot to the left foot of the stand, and push there.

The tang WILL break off, at least on my style centerstand.

This is all hearsay.  I have never broken one, myself.

Wow.  I have the correct stand.  Good to know.  Cool.  The tang was bent on mine, I had a welder heat and straighten it out.   Works fine.  Now I don't have to try and remove it.  Thanks.

It still needs to be removed from time-to-time to clean and grease the pivot points.

I got lazy and hosed my pivot bolts out with chain lube whilst working the stand up and down.  Hey, I have the stuff around anyway, and it cleans and lubes.  It was starting to feel gritty from all the road snot.
