Any ideas on tool roll hiding place/container

My R 80 ST restoration is proceeding well,but I am pondering how to carry my tool roll without compromising the open frame look (the side panels that came with the bike were broken and I didn't like the look) I need a water resistant case that is small enough to make disappear ( I hope)
Any thoughts ?

John,

It may not fit with the look you are trying to achieve, but years ago I picked up a black leather cylindrical pouch that fit neatly right underneath my headlight. It opens and closes with a brass zipper and has a weather flap over. It holds my tool roll, a rag, spare plugs and a small flashlight in a roll about 100mm in diameter and about 300mm long.

Thanks Dave, that location didn't occur to me. Something simple in leather(no studs or tassels a la Harley),I will have to see if anything like that is available. One good option, any others are welcome.

Lovely bike.

can you not use similar to the r65 seat tray?
It locates under the seat towards the front near the frame mount.

I've one spare if you need it

Hi Elliot, thanks for the very generous offer. I have the R80 ST tool tray but it is a very ugly thing compared to what is in my 1986 R65. The R80  St tray is unique (and ugly) and I was hoping to keep the view open thru the sub-frame.

Is the top frame member open at the aft end as on the twin-shockers? I have a long, skinny, heavy fabric, zippered tool carrier sold by Bob's BMW. Kinda of an Easy Rider stash location.

+1 on Monte's suggestion.  A very effective storage place.  I'm curious, it appears that your shock is upside down.  Is that how it's supposed to be?

Hi Monte, The main backbone is open ,however the seat mount at the front has a heavy metal leg that slides about 1 1/2" into the backbone. would the storage bag allow for this intrusion. The shock on the ST is inverted in any pictures I have seen ( I also wondered about that when I first got the bike in Sept. Bengt )

The cylindrical pouch I got was a Harley style accessory - but it looks
OK on the front of my bike and certainly comes in handy.  I don't recall where I got mine, but do check out those type of sites if you're interested. If I could figure out how to load pictures to this site I would show you, but I seem to be too much of a Luddite to figure that out.

Why not strap this to the underside of the seat, i'm assuming the seat lifts as on the R65, rivet some mounts in place & it'll hold well

Hi Dave, I spent some time on the net following up your suggestion and there seem to be lots of good possibilities. I think I may pursue several different avenues to get discreet storage. First will be the kathy's tube stash mentioned by Monte and Bengt then I think I may make a custom tool tray that fills the same area under seat as the standard unit but is only abut 2 1/4" deep x 7' long x  5 1/2" wide, I think this will handle most of my standard kit,if not I may get a small black leather tool pouch to put on the bike somewhere mostly hidden . Any other suggestions out there? This brainstorming is very helpful as I want to keep this bike as simple looking as possible( a big change from my R65 with the Hannigan fairing and panniers which has a lot of storage space on it) the R80 ST looks small next to the R65.
