I really haven't disappeared!
« on: August 14, 2012, 10:42:11 PM »
Hi Guys!  I really am still around.  Just been really busy.  And it hasn't even been busy riding.   :(

My Mom is 91 and is needing my help much more now.  And somehow I managed o get on the landscape committee of the Homeowners Association of the condo I have.  That in itself is a part time job with no pay.  But it's been worth it.  I finally got the landscape contractors to take care of the plants right.  No more shearing!!!  Let the flowers show.  And trim out the dead wood.  Gheez!  What does it take?  A college degree?

Anyway, I'm trying to get my bike on the road.  I dropped the bike trying to maneuver it around this spring.  And no, I wasn't riding it.  Just maneuvering it on my patio where I keep it.  It got off my center of gravity away from me and I couldn't hold it up.  It fell over on a wood planter box and bent the rear turn signal bracket.  Aarrrggghhh!  [smiley=furious3.gif]  I did ride it out on a couple of short rides but then realized after the last one that the whole tail light assembly was really loose and flopping around.

Turns out that one of the bolts holding the bracket and tail light assembly had torn right through the fender and the other bolt had widened the other hole.  Larry and I went and got some good epoxy glue and with some imagination, a flat piece of plastic and some aluminum foil, filled in both holes.   After it dried, I sanded it down well, took out the plastic from underneath and most of the foil and drilled the holes where they are supposed to be.

In the meantime I ordered a new bracket as the other one just wasn't going to get bent back straight again.  I think that there might have been some damage to this previously.  But now it's all back together and looking beautiful again.   8-)

Just one other problem now.  I also had a sudden screeching of the front brake.  Now the front brake rubs consistently and it sounds like sandpaper is in there when I just turn the front wheel.  Okay.  I'll take this to the technical section.  (sigh)
 ;)

Hi Melena!

We were beginning to wonder bout you!
Glad to hear that you are still with us - sorry to hear about your challenges - but with a little perseverance everything is solvable!

As far as the front brake goes - how long ago was the brake fluid last changed?   Does it appear dark in the plastic reservoir on the master cylinder?

I bet that's happened to more of us than would admit to it.. I did the same soon after getting my R65 - luckily no damage, and nobody saw it.

Thanks Mike.  I was missing all my friends here.  I'll get here more often now.

I'm sure you are right Mark.  I know of a couple of "garage drops" - one guy broke his foot. - ouch!  I'm glad you came out okay on that one.

Bikes don't stay upright very well going slow.  (Isn't that part of the joke about the guy who got stopped by a Highway Patrol? )    ;D

Woo Hoo, Melena! Hi there! As Mike said you have challenges that take up time and we understand. You are at that age when caregiving is a good possibility. Good on ya for being there!!
We know you don't have anyone to ask to be a spotter when you have to move your bike. It sure can get scary. You know, against my better judgment, I ask Derek to spot me sometimes when I move the Bonneville or LRB in my 10 by 10 Brrrm Closet just for that very reason...those bikes can get off centre and drag me over. I am just not strong enough or tall enough to stop them once they get going. The Brit could squash the German!! Or vice versa!! I hate asking Derek as he usually says if I can't do it myself, the bike is too big....but even if all goes well, it is just smart to ask for a spotter if someone is around.
So don't feel badly....it happens to all of us!! Ok, to you and me and Aïda more often.. ;D

Have you heard that next years MOA Rally is in Salem Oregon??
1983 R65LS - LRB still my favourite!? 1988 Honda NX250, "Toodles Too" and a Suzuki DR650, "Calypso." All stored in the "Brrrmmm Closet".

Thanks Sue!  It was a weird feeling to have it just fall over like that.  Very frustrating.  Luckily it all turned out okay.   And it doesn't have anything at all to do with it being too big.  It happens to the best of us.

YES!!!  I heard about that.  It's definitely in the plans!    [smiley=thumbsup.gif]  I hope you can make it next year!  That would be great!

I've got to start saving my pennies (oops, I think that's dollars now - pennies aren't worth much anymore).

Yep!  I heard about that.  I guess I was thinking about no pennies in Canada when I wrote that.  I think we should do that here in the US too.  I actually pick up pennies off the ground still, but only to give them to the next little kid I see.   ;D  They love them.

Hi Melena,

Still around as well.  I've been riding a BSA up and down the east coast which is crazier than riding the R65.    8-)

Looking for excuses and time to head west.
