Usually indicates month and year the part fits, in this case, no bikes manufactured later than April 1982.

Sure, Matt, but I can't find anything that indicates a change in the gearb ox specs or ratio's throughout the model.

The change was in the angle of the helical gears. Forget the actual angle but early and late versions are definitely not compatible. You can buy this special 5th gear pinion in both versions though on the same website.
