Me and my bike

Let me introduce me to you.

My name is Jaap, 68 year old and I live in the Netherlands near Rotterdam.

My bike has manifactured in October 1985 for the USA and was bought by an American in Februari 1986. When this guy moved in 1999 to the Netherlands he toke his bike with him and the bike become his Dutch licenceplate in April 1999.

I bought this bike in September 2006 with only 25,000 miles (= 40,000 km) on the ODO-meter. I am the third owner and the ODO-meter counts now over 63,000 miles (= more then 100,000 km) and it rides still perfect.

Yes, those panniers do look different - the outline appears similar to the older style Krauser bags, but the lids are definitely not any type that I've seen before.

By the second owner this bike was stolen and missing for about a year. When he was found the petroltank was damaged and the caps beneath the buddyseat were missing. He got a new tank and with an old Toyota colour (Turquoise) painted. The striping is handdrawn.

The sidecases are Krauser like, there are also BMW-cases that have this model. The manifacterer is Richa.

Hey Jaap - welcome - about a month ago I engraved a knife for a guy in the Netherlands - after he got the knife back from me he said it might be the last he has engraved - He said the duty back into the Netherlands was big dollars! - do you ever buy bike parts in the US? do they really nail you that bad on tax? tom

Tom here in the UK you can get round that by labeling the goods as a gift and sending any billing separately.

I could also go that way with PayPal but I choose not to - Unlike a lot of business's in this day & age - most of my work is done over the phone/e-mail or hand shake - honesty is no.1 - Sometimes folks trust me, a total stranger with family heirlooms, or send me something worth thousands of dollars  - some stuff you can't put a price on just for me to beat the hell out of there stuff with a hammer & chisel - So I keep everything above board. It has worked for 40 years so I'm not going to short cut something to save a few bucks.

Hi Jaap, we (or rather our bikes) are twins! Mine was built in September 1985. This R65 currently has a little over 20K miles on it since it was inherited from my dad who kept it mostly in his garage.. I just did a bunch of work on it so this is probably the best it will ever look. I'm glad you are enjoying your classic as much as I am mine!
