First short ride after valve job completed
« on: April 18, 2008, 09:55:23 AM »
So...it would seem that the valve clearances CAN changed dramatically after a new valve job. So I rode my initial 46 miles, parked the bike overnight to cool and then set about retorquing the heads and checking/resetting the valve clearances as per Ted Porter's instructions from Beemershop. The valve clearances were all over the place. The L. side ex. was tight as was both inlet and ex. on the right side. The only too big clearance was the L. side inlet. AND the clearances weren't just a bit too tight..they were a lot too tight! So, I don't trust that things have settled in and will be stable from here on in, so I will ride some more and check again really soon. Did you find this happening Rob V. when you had your valves done?

BTW, for those who read my post about oil leaks on nhmaf's "first ride" post, there is not a drop of oil that has dripped overnight. All new fluids are up to normal levels. I did run the engine so I assume oil is in those orifices that trap the oil and leak out the oil seal and rear main. I suppose the bike is just toying with me here! :o ::) :-/

I will have to check my notes when I get home, to see what my figures were after the valve job.

The clearances on my valves didn't change much, I think it was .002 in (.05 mm) but I used a solid copper head gasket, didn't compress like a stock gasket does after first installation .

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

My results were pretty much in line with Bob's, even with the composition head gasket...
