Did these guys just see you with the bike somewhere and offer on the spot? How did the german guy contact you since it sounds like he reached you by phone? Do you have a for sale sign on the bike?
I had a guy approach me once after I'd just gotten the G/S wanting to buy it or one like it. But that's the only time I can recall someone offering to buy my bike.
Just recently I saw my old R65 come up for sale by the guy I sold it to five years ago. I didn't realize how much I liked that bike till it was gone, and seeing it again gave me a funny feeling. Kind of like seeing an old girl friend you wish you'd never broken up with.
