Badge replacement?
« on: August 30, 2011, 01:37:39 AM »
I recently purchased an 1986 r65 and would like to replace the tank badges/emblems. Not sure what they are exactly called(the BMW logo). Anyone have a tip on where to buy. eBay has ones for cars. Sorry if a dumb question but I am new to this world! Thanks for any help and your patience.

When I replaced mine I went to the local BMW auto dealer since there is no motorcycle dealer nearby. Tell the guy in the parts dept you want 70mm BMW roundel wheel centers.
Keep your bike in good repair: motorcycle boots are not comfortable for walking.

There's a San Diego BMW bike shop.  It used to be called Brattin Motors, but I think they changed hands a couple years ago.  They will have the "roundels" you need.  The old ones come off by running some dental floss behind them.  Then you might need something like 3M bug and tar remover to get the remnants off.  The new ones just peel and stick.

Remember, the seat's tail piece roundel is a smaller diameter than the tank badge. Might save a trip for the exchange. ;)

Badges we don need no stinking Badges.
My badges add to the patina of the 28 year old cycle. I like the way it looks as it is. Keep the old ones and same the money in a repair fund. I'm just sayin.

I warn you, they no longer make the badges in yellow and green.

This is my personal preference, volunteered FWIW (with some trepidation):

My 1981 has the original tank badges (I think), but the rear badge on the pillion cowling seems to have been replaced. While the white on the rear roundel is still brilliant white, the tank-roundel white of both badges has a nice gold patina, similar to an antique photograph, and the chrome ring around it is almost a polished-brass color. Doubtless the lacquer has discolored with age. Still my personal preference lies with the "weathered" appearance as a sign of venerability. (Kinda like a salt-and-pepper beard.) I just wish the rear badge matched the other two.  ;)

Find a BMW dealer that has been there a while and you would be surprised the roundels you can find. I was in So FL and stopped in at 440 Cycle Shop, the oldest dealer in FL. In the case at the parts counter were BMW Roundels ranging in size from about 6mm (.25") up to almost 100mm (4"). Some were enameled brass, some self stick, some aluminum but all were from some model of BMW motorcycle. For $40 I walked out with an envelope of about a dozen in different sizes. Careful use has fellow airheads scratching their head and saying, "How come mine didn't have one there?"

FWIW, Capital Cycle (capitalcycle.com) lists the 70mm roundel in stock for $12.95, plus shipping. I'm citing it as price comparison.
