My 1983 R65 has arrived!
« on: June 30, 2011, 05:18:21 PM »
Hi folks!  Just brought home my 1983 R65, purchased from the 2nd owner who had it 22 years.  What a day - Shredded a trailer tire on the way to look at the bike, and when I called the seller to say I would be delayed to change the tire, he drove out to help - unasked!  I took it as a good sign when he arrived with a complete set of tools in his car, and upon arrival at his property the garage / shop he had was organized and clean as a whistle.  Test ride on bike was a dream, so I was hooked!   He threw in Shoei bags with his custom made custom mounts.

As you can see, from the photo, no side cover R65 decals, though I read past posts that said the dealers installed them, or sometimes not.  Does anyone have the dimensions of the decal letters so I can send them to one of the decal reproducers given in the past posts?  Also, does anyone have info on how effective the S-style quarter fairings / other small fairings or windshields are in blocking the wind at speed, and recommendations on brand, mounting hardware, etc?
Thanks!  Hope to meet some of you at the BMWOA gathering on Bloomsburg PA next month!  Mike

Oooh, very shiny!!!

Looks good - Hope you can make it to the BMWMOA rally.  Sue and I will be there, and from the sounds of it, at least 2-3 others as well.  Sue will have our official 'North America' R65.org flag to sign for folks who haven't signed it yet.  When we get closer to the time we will do some personal messages with cell phone #s to connect up @ the rally.   I'll plan to have my red R65LS there, and Sue may or may not have her red R65LS there - so if you happen across (2) red R65LS bikes right next to each other, you've probably found us..

Beautiful bike, Mike. Certainly appears to be a well loved R65.

I believe the OEM side panel decals -in your color choice- are available from dealers such as Bob's BMW, Chicago BMW and several others. Check their parts fiche. With this bike, it's gotta be OEM all the way, right? [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Monte: Thanks for the decal advice and leads.  It would be great if dealers still have these; I will try Bob's and Max's and other dealers first.

NHAF: Yes, I will look out for you and Sue on the red R65LS' in Bloomsburg.  This will be my first BMWOA rallye, so should be interesting.  Will be riding from CT.

Hope to see you at National Rally.  I am heading out there on Thursday from northern New Jersey.  If you are heading out that day, maybe we can meet up and ride together.

If Air4Life, you and me go, that will be three R65's in blue (2 1983 and 1 1982).  And the maybe Sue and NHAF with a brace of red ones.  Should be a good contingent.

Like he said, those going should exchange contact info as we get closer to the event.
