New here and new to BMW
« on: June 28, 2011, 05:19:35 PM »
I'm currently in Monmouth County NJ  I just picked it up today with 26K on it.  This is my first and oldest motorcycle.  I have ridden it a total of roughly 8 miles.  I hope to get some more in soon enough.

Definitely have a lot to learn and will be looking through the site for info...

Welcome aboard, AirFour.

If I had to guess, I'd venture your new ride is an 1983. Am I close?

You have the "good" kickstand with the large footpad to assist that puppy up n' over. Nice bags, shiny mufflers, engine guard, pretty paint and, what's this? 'af a mo'... suggest those metal spark plug caps be swapped out for a pair of NGKs. You may see a little voltage leak arcing during a night ride. [smiley=naughty.gif]

Go ahead and plan some time over the upcoming 3-day weekend to change all the lubricants -stem to stern, check valve lash, check air cleaner, eyeball that fuel filter for debris and generally get to know where everything is on the bike.

Ask questions if in doubt. That's a great looking, low mileage R65 you have. It should serve you well for many years.

Oh, and buy both manuals...[smiley=beerchug.gif]

Welcome aboard - nice looking ride, and well setup with BMW bags, and a windscreen and nicely original, too!

Looks in good shape.  With the 85mph speedometer, I would say 1982 or 1983.  The bags look newer than that (I have a set of original bags on my 1982, with different style latches).  Other than the windscreen on your bike, and few dings on my bike, the two could be twins.

Enjoy it.  You have a nice machine.

BTW, you are not far from me.  I am on the Passaic County/Bergen County border.  The BMW National Rally in Bloomsburg, Pa.,  should be about a 2 1/2 hr. ride for you, maybe I'll see you there.  July 21-24.

Thanks all.  RIght on the money with the age.  The paperwork says '83  I appreciate  the heads up on the upcoming ride.  When we get close I'll put out a shout and see if we can roll along the payment together... Thanks.

ps  I hope to learn how to show pictures better too.

Welcome aboard from a fellow newby!  Your bike looks really neat;  nice bags and bars too.  The bare bike could be the twin of the blue 1983 I just acquired.  look forward to sharing info with you as we sort out what we have!  Mike
