Turn Signals...
« on: April 09, 2008, 09:30:04 AM »
While test riding my '79 R65 after replacing a bunch of clutch elements I managed to snap an internal part of my turn signal switch. I found a cheap/used replacement and installed it... here's my question: when the turn signal is activated it beeps... that is until you squeeze the clutch, then it stops. Is this normal? The lights continue to operate when the beeping stops... and then if you release the lever the beeping starts again... :-?

I think the '79, and maybe the '80 model year had an aural warning connected to the turn directionals.

Rob Valdez has mentioned something abut this a while ago.

I guess it was rather annoying, and most riders disconnected them.

That is so it is not beeping all the time while you are sitting at a stop light with the clutch lever pulled in.

It is also defeated while in neutral.

For more info, see my response to this thread.

Rich, only the first couple of years do that.  Apparently the 79 as confirmed by Mr. Valdez and our '81 does as well.

I've had my '81 since new, and the buzzer or whatever was used, was never installed on my bike.

I actually looked into installing some sort of aural warning, but never got around to it.

My 79 R65 makes the beeping with the blinker on, but not with the clutch in.  Sometimes it screeches a little, and might even skronk a bit. At first the noise bothered me because I thought it drew extra attention to my novice riding style! But for some reason I keep it on. In crowded intersections people HEAR it (because I know they don't SEE me) and in my neighborhood the kids hear me coming and actually hustle to clear trikes and balls off the street! So for the time being.....

But the beeper is definitely coming off the '80 R80.

My '82 beeps whenever the signal is on -clutch in, clutch out - still beeps.  It doesn't bother me 'cause I usually can't hear it.

I think that is because one of the switches in the circuit (one at the clutch hand lever, one on the bottom of the tranny) is bad.

Or it might be a diode?

I've never had to fix that one, myself, so I've never retained the information.

Thanks... I guess my bike is operating as designed... i'm not sure if I like the beep or not yet... I'll give it a month and re-consider.
