6-cylinder BMW
« on: June 05, 2011, 04:16:54 PM »
I'm posting this note from my son's crib in Austin, Texas... the burg on the Colorado where the official city motto is, "Keep It Weird." They try hard every day!

Saturday, we stopped by Lone Star BMW, which, by the way, is the absolute most customer friendly BMW-Triumph dealer in the state. And I've been to a lot of 'em.

Sitting on the floor was a new K1600GT. What a beauty that scooter is.

"Go ahead, sir. Try it on for size." Guy hadn't even finished his sentence before I was making zoom-zoom noises from the cockpit. And only $28,000+, not including sales tax.

It's a big, BIG bike. By comparison, the "K" made the S1000RR parked beside it look like a 600 sport bike.

At the parts counter, my friend Les, who is the dealerships go-to man for all things Airhead, pulled the shift lever rubber I needed for the Triumph Trophy 900, no problemo. When I mentioned I needed a couple BMW OEM bendy filter kits for my Airheads, the other two counter cats stopped what they were doing and both said, "Airhead?"

Much animated conversation followed with the three. I felt like royalty. A fine Mexican food meal followed across the street at the famous Chuy's, washed down by several Shiner Bock brews.

We're now off to the coast for a week of beach life. Fresh swimming in the Gulf an hour ago seafood, adult beverages plus some sun, sand and surf.

See y'all next week.

Hail, King Monte!!

Enjoy your vacation break - you've earned it!

I've yet to see the K1600 in person, but I gotta say, that S1000RR certainly looks more like a 600, or 750 race bike anyway - though it has 2X the performance!

It will be interesting to see how well they sell - though it looks like one gets ALOT of high tech, uber-cool stuff for the 28 large, the number of $28K bikes being sold these days can't be going up in this economy (I would think) 'cept for perhaps sales to bloody wall street bankers...

Well I have to ask, when you were sitting on that new piece of German iron making zoom zoom noises, did the sales manager offer you a quarter to put into the slot to make it go up and down?

Enjoy the sun/surf/seafood on the Redneck Riviera.  We'll hold the fort down in Fort Worth.

I kinda pity the guy who would lug it around the city amidst all that traffic, potholes, air pollution and the 40C temperature were having right now, Yet I envy him everytime he's on the highway. This thing is like a couch on two wheels!
I'm kinda stumped on why the S1000RR produces more horsepower than this 6 cylinder-1600cc bus bike though.

Mate forget about the HP figure thats all about revs, the real figure is the torque & that 6 cylinder has bucket loads of it & then a few more buckets for good measure.

I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised with the new K1600!

I had paid no attention to it thinking it would be some gigantic monstrosity to compete with the Wing, but NO, it's a nice looking bike, just bigger.

It's not for me, but they have put a nice offering on the street for those who want something like that and can afford it.
