Took a 'tombstone' rubbing from my 1983 battery covers prior to refinihing them.

I think it all depends on the year.  Barbi's '84 had 'em in the middle...

Wow, I always wanted to have those decals. Mine came with faux R65LS decals on them.

I think i'll try to have the nearby sticker printing shop replicate it.  :)

I heard somewhere, maybe here, who knows, that the dealers installed the decals not the factory. So anywhere right side up is correrct. Though I do like them along the bottom.

That is correct.  I bought my R65 new from the dealer.  The decals were not installed on the bike, and the dealer gave them to me for me to apply.  I never did install them.

All R65LS owners...no decals on the battery side covers in original state. Had LS decals on either side of the front painted cowl and one decal across the rear cowl. Correct me if I am incorrect but that is how I got my bike and also shows them on the old brochures i have. Blue or black choices but no one is absolutely sure what year bike gets what colour on the silver or the henna red. I wonder if we could clarify it??
1983 R65LS - LRB still my favourite!? 1988 Honda NX250, "Toodles Too" and a Suzuki DR650, "Calypso." All stored in the "Brrrmmm Closet".

I found a very reasonable alternative source for side panel details (stickers really) at:

https://www.decalsplanet.com/index.php?section=showP&id=971

The 3" white ones go very nice with the black rattle-can paint job on my side covers and at $8 a pair, I won't start crying when they get scratched.  They were so cheap I ordered two sets so I'd have spares.

I mounted mine below center, aligning the top of the letters with that center divider in the middle of the 5 vent slots.  If you do that, the lettering is not really parallel to either the top or bottom edge of the panel and it looks a little weird.  But when you mount the panel on the bike, the letters sit nearly level and look just right.

I have a German book "Die Motorrader von BMW", it has factory photos of the R65 and R45, both show the decals low down. One shows an R65 ridden by one Kalli Hufstadt plus lady passenger, trying a Steve McQueen type leap. I would not like to try it.
