More coffee, vicar?

My R65 café racer project was the subject of a flurry of activity this week, and now has a stiffer frame,a lighter engine, a new top motor mount, and a removable frame rail.

More detail on the blog, if you're interested.

A combination of engine degreaser with red Scotch brite and a wire cup brush on the angle grinder. Once I'm happy with the fabrication, I'm going to have to strip the engine and I'm hoping I can get it all vapour blasted.

It's a bit late in the year now, but buying a MIG and some assotrted steel about September time allows you to practice your welding by making candle sticks. People with largish social circles can easily recoup the cost of the welder by giving candle sticks as X-mas presents.    ;D

Just found this post and must confess to being very impressed. One of my plans when I get more time and workshop space is to put a big valve R100 engine fitted with kickstart but with airbox and starter motor removed into an R65 chassis , but I'm now thinking it might benefit from some additional welding...

I'm only down the road from you in Somerset - fancy another challenge?

If you want to pop along for a chat and a nose round, let me know.

As a rule of thumb, visitors to the workshop are welcome on saturday afternoons (I don't do mornings.). I only guarantee two things though, the coffee, and the gravity. And sometimes I run out of coffee....

Do you think, that if I add enough gussets with Speed Holes for lightness, eventually the lightness of the holes will outweigh the added mass of the gussets?

Or not? :)

While it looks cool the headstock looks like overkill to my "un" trained eye.  I think you could achieve the same result from a smaller gusset crossing the corner on the headstock.  But I am not an authority on this.  You really need advise from a frame builder.  If you want rigidity that far down the tube from the head stock I think you need to cross the distance between the two tubes and make a triangle.  The triangle is what makes a rigid frame... not a couple of unsupported wings.

Sorry this is probably not what you wanted to hear...I will now apologise profusely and ask forgiveness.

Actually, according to most people I know, I am a frame builder.

Though mostly, I write about it these days....
