I Spy.....
« on: October 23, 2010, 06:01:22 AM »
So there i was flicking through 200 channels of gunge when i caught the last 1/2 hour of Saving Private Ryan ive seen this film a few times but never noticed the beemer at the end of the film as Hanks and his Sergent are retreating to the "Alamo" (bridge) one of them cant remember which takes cover behind a German military bike with side car.
What caught my eye was the engine was a relatively new airhead definitely not a 40,s beemer looking at the rocker cover anyone else spied this or know what bike it was it looked too low for a r100 maybe a r65.
If anyone has the DVD maybe they could check it out.

Mate i do the same thing when iam watching war movies set in that era.

But i would't be surprised if they used Urals or the chinese copies dressed up as bemmers, you know, to save a few $$$$.

I believe they are often modern Russian Ural bikes with a suitable paint job. I owned one a few years ago (without the paint). Despite its reputation it was totally reliable but incredibly heavy, the frame seemed to be made of parts left over from building the Eiffel Tower. Or the Brooklyn Bridge maybe. They are now only available here as sidecar rigs, though. The dealer told me he sells quite few with right-hand sidecar, these can't be road-registered here where we go on the left don't you know! but they are bought by war re-enactors and painted up. They keep the machine gun on the sidecar but it's demilitarized.
By the way the bike used by Steve McQueen in "the Great Escape" was a British Triumph TR6 with Nazi type paint job, no other disguise. Totally unlikely!

Sometimes when you pick up those obvious mistakes its hard not to look past them.

I recall when Top Gun first came out, I was working on F18 aircraft at the time, similar weapons to the tomcats used in the movies. We watched the tomcats take off from the carrier with dummy missiles, to those of us in the airforce this was VERY obvious by the blue coloring, and then a few minutes later they shot down enemy aircraft with them.

There was a lot more like that in that movie.

Ignorance often makes the movies more enjoyable.

There are some shows where I purposely avoid the special features.  Star Trek comes to mind.

But then there are documentaries, where more info is usually better!

I don't know how one could tell the difference between a R100 and a R65 engine on the screen.  The most telling difference is the shorter stroke of the R65, which is only really discernible in person.

The only movie that I can remember having an R65 in it, was The Day After, released in 1983 .

It was about a nuclear holocaust, where there was a total nuclear weapons exchange, focused on the residents of Lawrence, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri .

If I remember correctly, it was a red R65 .

Ah, Ya beat me to it Lou but as for the bike in the last part of the film. I's listed as a URAL. Yep they had to cut the budget somewhere.
