Mileage comparison 650 VS 1200

After about 1000 miles on the big roadster, I still have to shake my head whenever I fuel up.  The first check yielded 57 mpg.  Admittedly, I was driving like a newbie, and I didn't quite fill it to the neck.  But by the second check, I was starting to push the bike a little harder and I was careful to fill the tank completely.  Still doing 52+. Looks like the third round will clock in at somewhere between the first two.  I think I could probably squeeze 300 miles out of a tank if I really babied it.
The LS, ridden hard, would often drop into the low 40's.
I don't doubt the 1200 could be thrashed to well below that, but I don't think I have enough hair on my ass to do it.
I'm just impressed as hell at what modern motorcycle engineering can do in the way of efficient use of a non-renewable resource.  Until a real good electric bike comes along, I'm happy with my new boxer.

I was quick to notice the difference in fuel consumption betwen the '81 R65, and the '02 R1150R .

The R65 is a pretty consistent 39-41 mpg with my normal commute to work, the oilhead is around 47 mpg .

Get out on the open road and the oilhead is getting 57-59 mpg at 75-80 mph, the R65 at the same speeds, is around 35-37 mpg .

The oilhead will get better fuel mileage with premium fuel, I see an average of about 3-4 mpg increase with 91 octane fuel, the highest available here .

Sometimes, adding computers to a system can make it better - at least, that is the general focus of my business.  But, I also will be the first to admit that not everything is necessarily better when it is run by computers - like Toyota, for example.

My LS gets 50 US mpg or 60 mpg imperial. The 865 FI Bonnie was consistently getting 55 US and 65 imp. mpg  on my trip east!! New technology should be helping I figure. But the LS seems to be at its peak performance despite 95,000 miles on him. Which reminds me that LRB won't be at his peak if he keeps sulking in the 'Brrrm Closet"!!!! At least I have the Stabil in the gas tank or was it Sea Foam? No excuse now and Derek does comment about how much insurance costs to be not riding the LS.

Cool and grey skies here. Getting warmer and I hope for an improvement to this Fall's weather. Way too soon to stop riding. last year rode last Dec. 3rd.
