finally got around to replacing the abomination the PO put on. I really like the look of the solo seat on these bikes.

thanks monte. I know I'm too 'old' to care about such things as looks, but I can't help myself.

That's nice.  Did you just pick it up somewhere?  Is it fastened on?

it's a home brew. I did a foam blank, layed up the fiberglass, then did the seat foam, made the pattern, cut the leather, then my wonderful wife sewed it for me. it's attached with some brackets. i'm pretty pleased with it for a first effort. I don't know if it's ready for the iron butt, but it's plenty comfortable for my needs at this time.

That looks like a very nice job!   I think we may have found our groups custom saddle-maker, now!

thanks for all the nice words. I really do like how it looks. I need to start work on a rack.

Is that the original rear fender?  Mine wouldn't look that good with a solo seat.   :(

Yours does look good.

Now that is an impressive job, i-man!!! I always liked the looks of Rob's single seat/rack and a rack will complete the picture for touring needs. I like it without the rack so it would be nice to be able to take it off too and only use it when the duffel bag was needed on the rear.
I have to look but I think I have a bunch of stickers stuck on the fender. I must look to see how that fender could clean up. I like nhmaf's hint that we may have found our seat-man!!!
1983 R65LS - LRB still my favourite!? 1988 Honda NX250, "Toodles Too" and a Suzuki DR650, "Calypso." All stored in the "Brrrmmm Closet".

hey y'all. I just got back from visiting the folks in Tennessee. (flew, no motorcycle adventure to report)
Ed, I don't know if that's the original fender or not. I'm beginning to think nothing is original on the bike but the frame and engine. I'd be interested in knowing more about a real r65 rear fender, and how I'd make a positive ID.

Here's the aft end of an original R65 plastic fender. Yours appears to have some nice, shiny black paint. I was busy filling some mis-drilled mud flap attach holes. That and refinishing the license plate bracket after I sawed off the reflector mounting ears.     Monte
