Having never given a k bike much thought before I'm quite amazed at how nice they look once all the plastic has been removed..

yep, they do look much better with more removed. kind of wonder why some one didnt notice that in the advertising dept.

maybe bmw needed to look there for the younger crowd they where after.

I think that after BMW had their hit with the RS fairing design, and then the RT, they decided that more plastic & fiberglass covering = mo' bettah.   After all, they approved the Hans Muth R65LS fairing/cowling thing, which has its cachet, but is often a PITA to deal with when performing otherwise simple maintenance.
