A couple pics -
« on: March 13, 2010, 03:51:26 PM »
Gave the r65 it's first detail this afternoon since it was sunny and it hasn't really had one since it's been in my possession.  I purchased some aluminum wheel cleaner and a couple scotch-brite pads and really went to work on the wheels and engine.  One of the saddlebag frame mounts is broken so I removed the saddlebags until I can get a friend to weld it back together.

Sweet, Graeme.  Where did the front fender originate? And what muffs are those? Look rather British and all that...     Monte

Thanks, Fellas.  Monte: I actually don't know where that fender came from... it's not original/stock? I'm not sure about the mufflers, either.  I know they're not stock, and I DID find the original mufflers. The straight pipes that are on there now are loud, that's all I know. Sounds like a Harley roaring down the road. :)

Semper, you did ask before and I promised you pictures.  They are Kenda 450-18, part number K270 6P.  I have one brand new, never mounted rear tire if you want it cheap! ;)  You can see where the tire has chewed the right corner of the fender. The fender wasn't aligned over the tire perfectly.  Also looks REALLY close to the swingarm on the right side, too.

Ah but there is space!  So they do fit!  Thanks.  I think when the time comes I will go with the same dimension as yours but with the Bridgestone TW-302's front and rear.

They have the harder center (for distance) with the softer chewie edges (for the corners).  They have worked so far on the BSA...

Detailing question:  What are the stock exhaust pipes (not the final "mufflers" but the pipes from the engine) made of? Stainless steel? I'd like to get them a bit cleaned up and shiny but don't want to damage the finish if it's sensitive.

I dont know what the stock 'headers' are made off but just use a magnet, if it sticks it's steel, if it falls of (does not stick) its stainless.
But dont use steel wool to clean header or exhaust pipes, small fragments (very very small) get left behind & causes rust spots, use a good metal polish :).

btw great pics [smiley=thumbsup.gif], your bike looks great.

OEMs are steel. Newer BMWs have stainless headers that turn to a golden hue during engine operations. "Ours" become rusty, pitted, get sorta rough lookin', occasionally get a coat of hi-temp paint or even a header wrap... that's not a good look, IMO.

Thanks again.  I'll have to find some good metal polish and get to work.  The horizontal pieces are nice but the curved part coming out of the engine are discolored.

Is the seat covering leather ?

When I had the seat recovered on my '81 back in '97, I wanted to put leather on it, and I was advised against it, the shop owner said it wouldn't stand up to the sun and heat .

Our header pipes are supposed to turn shades of blue.

I know they're going to turn blue eventually. They just need a good polish at the moment. :)

Bob:  I don't think it is leather... feels like thick vinyl to me.
