BMW S1000R

I have no great interest in modern bikes but you have to admire the awesome technology BMW have built into their new 193HP S 1000RR superbike. Looks like they may have put one over on the Japs first time out.  I don't think I'm going to be a customer although one ride would be nice. It would remind me why I bought a Z900 35 years back.

S1RR is definately a great bike(no interest here either)but you will see to the end of the year the jap will pull the same numbers from the engine.The ECU has a four stages with different HP output,but i read that the highiest one is not available for the street.It has to be unlocked somewhere.Why?I don't know.

I can't imagine 193 hp, my R1150R has 86 hp, and the acceleration is quite a rush, 2 and a half times that must be motorcycle euphoria and probably scary at the same time !!!!

I think I would have nightmares forever if I ever tried to go 150mph.
I did go 100 a long time ago when I had my Yamaha 750 triple.  That was pretty cool, but I was getting so many tickets for just 10 or 15 over, I didn't see much future in high speed travel on public roads.

I was pretty much insurance-conscious (cheap) at the time, too.  Hence my not having any problem with my new BMW being "only" 650cc.

Not to worry, Rob. I hit "the ton" on my '81 R65 just last month going north on Interstate 35 a little south of the Big Red. A hefty tailwind helped plus I had crawled under the paint. Simply wanted to be able to say I did it. That's it for me...

...until the '83 begs for it.

My Kawi has 110 Hp at the crank, and around 90+ at the rear wheel - any more HP than that and I think that keeping rear tires on the bike could get prohibitively expensive.   I cannot imagine any practical purpose for that much HP on a street bike (especially one that light) if one has any inkling of obeying speed limits.

I'll be impressed if we see any of these at the BMWMOA national rally in a year or two with 30K miles - I'll bet no one rides them anywhere near as long as they do an airhead, or oilhead (or brick) for that matter!!

 4 years ago i bought kawi ZZR1200 156hp.Did 160 mph and i don't think i was even closer to use all of this 156hp.There is no place on the street for using all of the potential of S1RR.I rode all of Jap liter bikes and there is no big difference,so i doubt S1rr will give me More thrill.
 But i will try it for sure

I routinely ride my R1100RS around 100mph and have had it up to 132mph (all indicated, of course, so take out 5-10%).  But I keep it at a friend's place in Karlsruhe, Gemany.

And, it is true that I blew up the motor -- it did have 180k miles on it, though -- while travelling at a good clip of about 110mph on the autobahn.

It  is good once a while to ride the bike close to its limit(not at 180k)
However my theory is:
  On freeway ride it with 75% of redline maximum- 8k rpm >5.6k rpm(75%)
  On the street 75% of freeways limit maximum- 5.6k rpm>4.2k rpm (75%)

I *think* it is for tires and conditions.  (I'm probably wrong about this)

1) Wet Street tires.

2) Dry Street tire.

3) DOT race tires.

4) Race slicks.

The ECU limits torque applied to the rear wheel based on type of tire, condition of the road, and lean angle.  So I guess your new BMW will have a lasar ring gyro in it.  Yee Haw!

I'm holding out for the 1300cc six cylinder BMW - the CBX killer.   8-)

Well i did it.Went to a local dealer and saw it.The S1000RR after a little chat he offered me to take it for a spin(it is a demo bike)Well it was great.it came with all 4 stages preloaded ECU(stage 4 need a different chip)It does not give me more thrill than cbr1000rr but is definitely crazy fast.Well while i like the engine and whole design of the bike,i don not like the riding position at all.and the sticker price was over 16k.

We have the demo at Capitol and after it was all prepped, all the guys in the shop had to take it out for a spin.  The two youngest (used to riding jap bikes) thought it was pretty good.  The older techs came back "That's *?#$%#^& GOOD!"  It was pretty funny.  

Unfortunately, when I sat on it, both my little feet just swung in the air...no test ride for me.    (Graham's pretty happy about that, I must say) but one of the (older) techs have offered to take me for a spin.  

We've already presold three of them.

I am no Batman (more like Tintin myself).

I translate that design-marketing direction as a lack of identity. Finally BMW decides to build all kind of motorcycles for any-budget, any-age, any-purpose,....but not for me! And by the way any guess why all of these new models have to look so aggressive?

Almost irrelevant but Guzzi still builds some wonderful bikes, Ducati too!
