Setback on LS

Oh well...

Seems Roland detected a micro leak in tank, and when it was pressure checked a few more micro holes became evident.

It is suspected that a bit more corrosion and rust lies within tank and what to do next is the question.  Seems like a sealant or repair of some sort is just covering what may be a larger problem for the future.  There is a used tank on ebay for $200, but who knows,  the same problem may be evident within that tank which hasn't been pressure tested.  Or, my leaning, just pony up $760. and get a new R65 tank from Germany.  My guy will  then paint it and bike will be fini.

So, do you guys have some thoughts.  Sure, I'm not happy about dumping more $$$ into  this project, but, at least I'll know it won't be a problem in my lifetime.

Regards, Peter

There's a line of products, under the name POR 15, for sealing leaky fuel tanks .

They have a motorcycle kit for about $45-50 .

But the tank must be clean of all rust and original liner, before the final coating is applied .

I'm up to that point now with the tank from my '84 LS, it looked like an old rusted car exhaust system inside the tank .

The manufacturer claims small leaks like you have, will be cured with their product .

I used the POR-15 kit on my R51/3 tank.  It comes with a stripper for any liner that's left and an acid wash that cleans up the rust.  You have to wash the tank in between and afterward before the final lining goes in.

It was a lot of work to apply, and the stripper will take off any paint it gets on.  The tank on my bike was losing the original lining but was otherwise sound; and now, two years later, I've had zero problems with it.  The lining is very thick and will definitely fill pinholes.

I agree with these guys.  At long as the petcock mount isn't about to fall off, POR 15 will do the trick.
Yes, you will probably have to repaint, but you are going to do that with a new tank, anyway.

If you haven't heard about tank linings (and their success) by now, it just means you are young! ;)

And yes, if there is one pin-hole, there will be others.

Drain your tank once a year, remove the petcock and get any water out of there - especially if you just finished a two-week tour in the rain.

New tank ordered from Germany, with rush shipping requested.

I have too much invested not to do the bike right.

I hope you didn't pay too much!  S. Meyer sells them for $484 USD (depending on exchange rate).

Good people to deal with.  I bought my seat from them.
