Iceberg Ahead!
« on: January 07, 2010, 01:12:52 PM »
Today, down here in North Texas, we'uns are experiencing the curse that keeps Northerners laughing about us year 'round. Yep, that crap we called frozen rain.

24 degrees F this morning with a very light sprinkle of rain. ZAP! We are icy in spots and cars are playing pinball against one another. Slow down? Man, this is Texas. What y'all talkin' about.

Schools are closed so I'm back to messing with the Beemers in a mildly chilly shop. Naturally, the sun has come out and the thin, slick spots on "bridges and overpasses" are now clearing. Many of the area's cities have ordinances prohibiting running lawn sprinklers during freezing temperatures. My state don't sand no roads... We write citations.

Too funny. I can't wait until the evening news and videos of bumper car madness.

I do like Lucky Lou's snowman motorcyclist.

Freezing rain, is the quickest way to shut down a transportation system !!!

When I lived in Chicago, I worked at Chicago's Midway Airport, there was a major railroad yard just about a mile or so south of the airport .

Every major north/south arterial surface street for 9 miles, either had  a bridge to go over the yard, or tunnel beneath it .

Forget about getting to work, or getting home, if we had any amount of freezing rain .

The traffic piled up at either side of the bridge, or at the bottom of the tunnel .

Not even to mention the havoc it caused to the air transportation system .

At 1230, we've got high thin clouds, and 60 f. (16C) .

Well its official longest/coldest spell for 30 years and at least 2 more weeks to come temperatures hit -20c in places last night only 2 deg warmer than the south pole!!! freezing rain would be a welcome change at the moment.....road grit supplies running out and rumours about gas shortages, on the plus side the NASA images of Briton on the weather forecast were fantastic....total white out.The forecast here is -3 at 4pm tomorrow -12 tonight and more snow oh when will i test the new screen im going stir crazy. I had an hospital appointment this morning(op pending)10 o'clock set off at 8.45 got there 10.10 only 8 miles.

School opened up today and as I can't get the car out never mind the bike had to walk 3 miles to work this morning. According to the Met Office station nearby it was -16 Deg C at 800am. I don't ever remember it being so cold.

Views are great though and I'm hopefully walking off some of the Christmas excess.

I certainly feel left out.  It was 75f and sunny here in Surf City today.  After lounging in the hot tub this morning I took the R60/2 out to meet a friend for lunch.

Darryl, Why don't you send some of that warm weather north across the Bay?  It barely got to 50 here in Sonoma County today.  Brrrrr.  Gloomy gray January.   :P  It's the coldest winter we've had in many years too so far.

Can you tell I don't like January?  February is next worst.  I start feeling human again in March.  Glad February is a short month.

I didn't realize you guys in Great Britain were getting such cold weather.  OMG!!  -20 C?  I don't know where that  shows up in the Farenheit scale, but it's still too d--n cold!  Hopefully this weather pattern will break soon!

I've seen reports, that if the Gulf Stream ocean current, were to 'shut down', a possible consequence of global warming, the weather you are experiencing now, would be close to a typical winter, if this were to occur !!!!!!

Yeah, if a bunch of fresh water heads south from the North Pole, as from a sudden ice melt, it disrupts the gulf stream.

It was typical 40s rain this morning on the way to work.  Who says airheads aren't water cooled?

Uhhh, R65 maybe?   ;)

I've been wondering how you're doing back there Bill.  I've heard about the freezing temps in GA.  As far as I know it's not supposed to freeze there.

What about all you other guys living along the Atlantic side?  Nasty weather out there!   What about you guys in the northern part?  I'll bet the snow has you socked in!  I'll send warm thoughts your way, but not so much that everything melts at once.   :o

Same here in East Kent, all you icy North Britain people. It's 1 pm and been snowing hard last two hours. Many roads closed according to the radio. Unlike most  here I do have a set of snow chains for the car but that's no help if I get stuck behind a traffic block. Staying home for now...the R65 has a full charged battery in emergency I can bring it in and work TV and a light with the AC inverter. And I have a couple of bags of coal for the normally unused open fire. Well sometimes the power does fail out here in this rural part! You lucky people in Texas....

Just blown the Turbo on my work van waiting for a repair guesstimate been told 2 to 4K gulp.....apparently this Ford self destruct mechanism sucks the oil out of the sump as it fails,I was on the M1 doing 70ish just had a funny whizzing noise lost power then the revs went mad loads of smoke and the engine wouldn't shut down with the ignition off(burning the oil and apparently running on the oil from the sump????) oh if BMW made Vans.
So i see a new van and a few days off in my future....just call me "lucky" [smiley=sad.gif] [smiley=sad.gif]
