first 4 pictures from today.  Still left to do: clutch cable needs to be adjusted, needs drive train oil ( drain plug needs rethreading), needs gas and carbs tuned.  I need spring.

Getting towards the end.

odometer and calender define this as a used machine...

However, it is newly restored and much time, effort and new original parts as well dollars dedicated to the project.

The mechanic Roland Sotello of 'Spareparts,' a small niche shop in Phila is clearly responsible for the mechanicals, the painter Mark the outstanding richness and exactness of the paint, and I for coordinating and pushing this restoration along.

But your right...it sure looks new and I expect it to run better than new.

What kind of price were you charged for painting the LS parts ?

My '84 isn't in too bad of shape, but compared to the bikes I've seen here, it's a 'junkyard' dog .

It's more of an orange color to it, rather than the red color it was when new .

$1000, includes painting wheels, correctly prepping all parts and BMW correct color and texture.

Boy that is an inspiration!!! The paint job looks beautiful..is your painter doing it just for you or is he in business? If in business, could you provide a contact?? Also, your exhaust system is actually shiny! Any idea what paint was used or is that a black ceramic coating?

Sue, my 83's LS-style muffs on the Mexico Bike (or Lucha Libre as Bengt Mike calls it) were looking pretty dull so I wet sanded them with 400 & 600 grit then shot 'em with VHT High Temperature Brake Caliper Paint. Gloss Black. The manufacturer suggests a post-cure of the paint by heating the parts... as in riding the bike!

The paint is available in rattle cans. I had to order the gloss black from Jegs or Summit; I've slept since then and can't remember which place. Took almost two cans.

Exhaust is new BMW original and was ordered through Bob's BMW;  I was told it came from Germany.  Cost ~$1200 complete including hardware.   It is a black chrome.  Clearly shiny.

I'd be real interested if other LS exhausts were the same, at any point in time.   It is different than the original black exhaust shown in an original brochure that I have.  Nonetheless, the bike looks GREAT and I can't wait to see it outside, let alone run it in the spring.   It will be a great relief after running an MV Agusta  F4 for 5 years.

The painter mostly does auto restorations, and does work for Roland, the mc shop owner.  I do not know him personally, but do know that he does select mc paintwork.

My 1981 R65 has the OEM LS black chrome muffs and they are still in excellent condition. The data stamping in the metal includes the BMW part number plus some USA-mandated info.

Outstanding.  Did you have the "R 65 LS" logo on the rear printed up?  My silver one clearly had one on the back originally, and maybe on the front as well.  You, uh, didn't happen to print up more than one set by any chance?  Anyone?

And your logo graphic is black with the white LS!  So nice.  I have been led to believe that the only decal still available was the blue with the see-through clear. I await your answer too.

I had the decals made after we had that discussion when the restoration started.  R65lust...do a search.
