Bmw put the new DOHC on the RT and GS and left the R with the old SIHC.

I'm just curious if there is anyone on the forum entertaining the idea of purchasing a new BMW bike in the next 12 months.  If so, which model and what are the reasons for your decision?

I am thinking about buying one in the next year, depending on finances.  I have not decided on the model yet, but the leading contenders are the K1300GT, K1200LT, and R1200RT.  The main reason is that I would like to get back into long distance touring, and would like something bigger than a R65.  Also, I am a little apprehensive about long distance touring on a 25+ year old machine where parts and service may be difficult in some areas of the country.  My R65 is due for a lot of work before I would consider it reliable enough for long distance touring.

While I can certainly appreciate wanting a new bike to travel on, there's no reason why a 25 year old bike can't make the trip.  I've made a couple of 3,000 mile trips to NM and back in the last couple years on my 35 year old R90S, and it's been a very comfortable touring mount.  (It's true though that I would have taken my R1200ST this year, if I hadn't just used it to go deer hunting.)

I was seriously in the hunt for a new R1200RT earlier in the year. I thought I "needed" one. Much of this thought of "need" comes from getting through the SW desert every year for my annual cross country tour on my 1978 R100/7, which by the way I purchased new. After serious consideration and contemplation of the price tag, my reasoning changed. Can't fix the new bike on the road side, or even in my shop, and even though the comforts of a new bike are appealing there's something very respectable and exhilarating in my opinion to a +7,000 mile tour on a vintage bike. It does everything well. It's simple, functional and sexy. Not to mention the pleasing aesthetics of an airhead. If I had money to throw around I may take the plunge for a new bike, but I have a very strong suspicion once I got out of the desert and into the Hill Country, Black Hills, Smokey's, Rockies, Ozarks, or Sierras, to mention a few - I would long for my airhead with heartache and separation anxiety. I'm looking forward to the completion of the 650 restoration to get it out on an extended tour. I'm still on the fence but my guess is my biggest future decision will be what year, model and version airhead to restore next. Just my opinion.

What a coincidence, Mike.

A new guy in the neighborhood shows up with a 1978 R100/7. Fellow knows nada about the bike but said he has wanted one since they first came out. Patient fellow, eh?

Over Christmas break -we're both school district employees- I'm supposed to show him how to set valves and a few maintenance check procedures. He wants me to ride it!

Is this fellow's name Jobe? I'm comvinced his long wait will reap some benefits and a lot of pleasure. As well, my 650 will serve to me. Still waiting for the heads and jugs to return then get it buttoned up and fired up. There's just something about these airheads. Happy wrenching and riding Monte! Tell your friend the biggest enemy to these bikes is a docile life.
