R65 classic racer

I'm going to be turning my R65 into a classic racer but aim to keep it road legal.

Regs here say it must have spoked wheels, which is a BIG problem and the solution might be a complete front ed swap - options here in South Africa are very limited!

Trying to source rearsets is impossible so I'll probably make them... any thoughts on cable operated rear brakes?

I'm looking for any pics of R65s with a cafe/classic racer feel......

Check out the R65 in this website.  http://www.cafeboxer.com/  I think maybe the only thing remaining is perhaps the frame.  Hmmm, wonder if I can take the engine from my R100GS and stick it into an R65 frame?

AFAIK, the engine mount hole centers are the same from '55 up to '95 - probably even earlier.

I haven't back checked these links, just typed them from my paper file but it's a start.

Steve,

At least you are starting with a post 81.  Being lighter and having 5 bhp on the pre 81's.  

Mines 1979...doh!  But it does have post 81 heads (more power!).  Offset by a heavy bosch starter, a heavier flywheel, iron cylinders and a fat pilot!  Oh, and those conical air filters do nothing for the top end....One day I will put my airbox back....

I'm a simple man (originally from Brum!) and being close to 50 I'm not the type who wears out knee sliders.

I'm just looking for a simple toy to have a bit of fun on. I'll shave some weight off and give it better brakes but still keep it road legal so I can ride to the track.

I did have a pair of foam filters and they made it more responsive, but I thought it was a bit lean so I put the std box back.

I've started on a racing seat, and next stop is to get rid of the rear mudguard but I'm a bit worried about the weight distribution by taking all the bits off the back.

a heavier flywheel

I have a '81 flywheel assembly if you ever feel the need, Steve.  It is yours.

All you will then need is an appropriate gearbox/input shaft.

Not to worry Rob, I really can't be bothered.  

My heavy flywheel has been lightened a bit and that will do - neither one or the other!

If I had been really flush I would have started again with a post 81!

But I am 95% there so why bother - its for the road and not the race track.

I am pleased that I got a '82 engine for my most recent replacement (3rd engine in this chassis!).
I just didn't want the expense of a different tranny/input shaft, and I was happy with my stock heavy flywheel, so I figure my engine should be like me - slow to change!

I started making a single seat, but my dilema is whether or not I just modify the std subframe or make a new one.

Is it possible to move the rear wheel a bit to get more clearance for a bigger tyre?

Go ahead and modify your sub-frame, if you want to.  It can always be replaced if need be.

I wouldn't bother trying to fit a wider tire.  Someone discussed this in the technical section.  It didn't sound very good.  You can always go for a sticky tire, but I guess you are looking for visual performance?

San Jose BMW sells a racing pistons for r75/5.There are the same size like ors 82mm.I spoke with the owner mr Hodgson and he told that they fit.Since the compression is very high 13.5:1 or so.he said the cylinder will need work too.If you are interested you can e-mail him.
  Just make sure you specified the e mail is for him.
