R65 Yard Art
« on: July 22, 2009, 10:59:25 AM »
Finally...  I'm laying color on the '83 R65's body parts. So many distractions; grandchildren visiting, honey-do's, too hot, too wet... blah x3. Oh, and there was that anniversary boat ride to Cozumel to hang out at Jimmy Buffett's joint  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I knew if I kept the PVC bits from my wife's DIY hothouse they'd eventually come in handy for something really important, like BMW stuff.

BTW, the color is the same on everything but in looking at my snap, the reflections off the parts look like totally different shades. At least I think they're all the same...

The '83 was originally BMW #501 metallic blue. I found a fender sticker and some original color during the paint prep work. My sorta-501 metallic blue is from a 2010 Honda Insight cage... A close enough to perfect match.

The parts are curing in the solar oven but should be ready for some 600-800 grit color sanding this evening. I'll finish up the final color coats in a day or two. I'll post a before and after shot of the bike.     Monte

Funny, just before I saw your post I had the same thought regarding the BIG Calder that hangs over every visitor's head in the East Wing of the National Gallery of Art.

looks good. Can't wait to see the finished product. Gives me inspiration but my R65 is black- that's a lot of work.

My other R65 is in original BMW black complete with the OEM red/white pin stripes. Wouldn't have the heart to lose the stripes!   Monte

Honda evidently has used this color several times.

For the 2010 Insight, the color is called Clear Sky Blue Metallic. OEM paint code is BG53M-S.

It's also been known as Brilliant Sky and Cerulean Blue. Go figure.

The paint is darned close to BMW-501 but I would strongly encourage you to test match in an inconspicuous location. I can't guarantee nuttin'.

Note: I have posted to the Photo Gallery a few snaps of the parts holder jigs I fabbed as aids in no-touch spray paining.
