Short people....
« on: July 17, 2009, 08:00:50 AM »
Have a woman interested in Blue, but she says her legs are "really short" (I assume they are just long enough to reach her feet) and is worried about the height.  Who here has the shortest legs that can give me some insight to pass along?  She's a bit of a drive from me and I hate to tell her "suuuuure, no problem with your height" only to have her flail her dangling legs frantically trying to find the pavement.

Hopefully I'll sell her before I have to do a bobber conversion, or hmmm maybe a trike?   :o

Jonathan, Could you give her the seat height of the bike while it's "off stand"? Maybe some sorta "inseam" idea? Maybe suggest a nice pair of Capezio spikes...     Monte

I got the seat height off of the bmbikes.co.uk spec pages, but I'd hate to scare her off just based on the dimension if there are others out there with some experience and/or wisdom to impart.  While it's nice to have long legs and flat foot both feet at a stop light, is it crucial?  What do our fellow "vertically challenged" R65 owners think?

I'm 5ft 6in tall, with a 29 inch inseam, and I have no problems with the R65 at all .

You can always remove foam padding in the seat and then add a gel pad, that will give you around a 2 inch seat height reduction .

She's 5'3".

I did notice that Noemi Berry, writer of the ubiquitous R65 FAQ, says that she is only 5'1" and had few problems after the brown side stand was installed (which blue has, thanks to NCSteve).

I'm meeting her tomorrow.

Otherwise....who needs parts? (ducking for cover here - just kidding, sort of)

Jonathan -

I'm 5'0" with a 26in inseam.  I put lower shocks on the back and carved a couple of inches out of the seat to get my two toes on the ground.  I also used to run lower profile tires on my R65, but I can't find those anymore.  The longer I've ridden, the more comfortable I've gotten with it. Some of it will depend on her experience and how comfortable she is on a bike.  For me, the weight made a difference as well as the height.

Good luck with it!  Sorry I didn't see this yesterday, hope it's not too late...

Jonathan, I'm a skosh under 5'6" (was a bit over that mark a couple decades ago), and my inseam supposedly is 29". I can flatfoot the bike fine when it's off the stand, but I have been in cross-grade situations (generally in parking lots) where I can get my uphill foot on the ground with no problem, but there's no way with the downhill foot. Not a comfortable feeling. Thus, I've begun a program to lower my bike. (More about that later on another forum.)

I assume that your 1984 has the later-design center stand. Mine doesn't, and the stand on mine is worn/bent to the point that I have trouble getting it off the stand, even on level ground. I'm in the process of installing a 1983-84 design. (See Tech Forum within the next 48 hours for progress report & information request.)

A side stand helps, but not in all cases. Sometimes the center stand is the only safe way. Also, search the R65 archives and the MOA Forum for threads about the downside of parking a hot airhead with a sidestand: oil seeping past the left-cylinder rings & into the combustion chamber, causing the characteristic airhead smoke cloud on restart and a potential long-term problem of carbon buildup on valves piston. Even though it's a PITA, when I dismount and my engine is hot, I try to use the side stand only long enough to permit me to reposition myself to jack the bike onto the center stand. (Bear in mind that Noemi Berry's experience riding R65s for decades doubtless compensates for a lot of her height disadvantage.)

All this does not mean that you should give up hope! By all means, measure the bike off the stand, then have someone measure it with you sitting on it. (It will be lower, obviously, with the shocks under load.) Then try to get the potential buyer to sit on it to see for herself. If she has experience, she should know all this. If she doesn't, then your challenge is to try to build her confidence. IMHO, there isn't a better mid-size bike than the R65 for a small person.

Good luck!
JT

Actually, as it turned out she was in town, and I took it by her place on Saturday (before Aida's post).  She's not not experienced on road bikes,  only dirtbikes that she can just hop off of and drop, so her height hasn't been a problem for her in that respect.

I think perhaps more an issue than her height, is her weight.  She said she was 100 pounds, but i think that might have been with several rolls of pennies in each pocket.  I took her for a brief ride and I think I've had more weight in groceries on the back!

So obviously, her seated height isn't much different than the off stand height.  On the ride off stand, her toes barely touched the ground.  Off stand might have given just a bit more, but with her weight, not much.  What I did do is look at the seat per Bob's and Aida's advice.  The seat on the bike has moe than 3-1/2" of foam, which she's not going to compress much.  With the seat removed she could just about flat foot the bike, so wee discussed the possibility of having an upholstery shop modify the seat, plus different shock might help as well.

Not a lost cause, but I'm not holding my breath, either.  The good news is that we've got a young 20-something who's got the bug and prefers the classic design and therapeutic purr of an airhead to all the whining crotch rockets and thunderous cruisers out there.  Perhaps tastes are not dead among the next generation of riders.
