Impressed with BMW longevity ....
« on: June 19, 2009, 12:08:59 PM »
I just got my R65 back after having new pushrod and fork seals fitted by Ray at Cytech today and I'm impressed. It's seldom one gets a bike back so clean.
Also did the cyl base gasket and had a look at rings & bore. He gave them all a clean bill of health and we have come to the conclusion that the bike has been round the clock so it has done 152 000 km or 96 000 of them funny mile things.
Just gotta share this pic with y'all .......

Steve, do you perhaps know what the price of oil filters is at Cytech ?

I will be visiting the US during August, and my intention is that should prices be substantially better in the US, rather to buy a couple of filters over there.

For the price of one R65 oil filter, bought in Durban, I can buy 3 oil filters for my Kawasaki, and still get some small change.

Yikes

A "clean" bill if health indeed!  Did the shop bead blast that top end or is your bike always so neat?  And those pipes...speechless.

After the wonderful 100 mile spin I took to Williamsburg and back, yesterday, its nice to be reminded that there are many, many, many more miles left to go on the old girl.

I really didn't look at the bike when I collected it, I saw it had been cleaned, but didn't pay attention until I got it home.
I'll go back on Tuesday and ask them what they used and how etc.
I know they had the cylinders off.
He said my engine insides look goods, valves dont need attention or anything.
From looking at cables and the clutch we replaced in Feb and general wear an tear we reckon mileage has been round the clock so it approaching 100 000 easy miles.

Danie, this is what I paid in February:
1x OIL FILTER - R  210.18
1x OIL FILTER O RING - R 25.36
1x OIL FILTER GASKET - 12.24

I will get prices for you on Tues .... or email Ray - ray@toursforafrica.co.za

Steve, I bought 2 oil filters from Tommy Johns BMW in Pinetown for R106.00 each, about two years ago.  The agency has been closed down in the meanwhile, and my R65 has been off the road for slightly longer than a year, due to camshaft problems. So I have actually been out of touch with the latest prices. While my R65 is back on the road again, it is about time to buy a new filter.

I must say though, I am a bit shocked about the price that you have mentioned. For R210 per filter, I can buy exactly 6 oil filters for my Kawasaki - at R35 each !

As said above, if prices are much better in the US, my intention is to buy a couple over there. If prices are better, and you are interested, I will be back at the Oliver Tambo airport on Monday, 17 August, at 21H25 - or I can send the filters to you via Postnet.

You and Trevor can just let me know if you are interested.

Hopefully one of the friendly forum members will be so kind to give us an idea about the latest oil filter prices in the US.......... :-[
