Red is NOT orange
« on: May 07, 2009, 08:25:39 PM »
I like to order parts and get stuff in the mail.  This month it's BMW stuff.  Last week I ordered stuff for my R65LS from Bobs BMW.

Today a box arrived.  New roundels, new side battery covers primed, gromets to hold them inplace ( yes, I will get the bungy or more securely atttach them), a new instrument cover and front fairing in original color.

Lo and behold, Hennared is not the oxidized orange currently on my lovely.  The hennared IS redish with hint of orange.  My bike has orange with navel orange.  Did you know navel oranges are $1.00 a pc?  Anyway, I have some head scratching to do on the cosmetic options for my LS.

So there you have it...red is red NOT orange.  I'm not even sure if henared original and pristine would look good on this AGED bike in 2009.  It may be "too bright."

We'll need to ponder this awhile :D...goodnight.

Peter

Well then, now that that's cleared up. One of my all time favorite colors is the red painted on Porsche cars between the late 70's mid 80's. Just somthin' about the way they stood out on a steel Grey New England day in February. Would look good in "Pennsey" too but to each his own.

The side cover bungee cords offered by Bob's BMW are nice. Unfortunately, they don't fit the R65. Save your money. Use a simple zip tie passed through the louvered area and around the adjacent frame member. Good insurance.

That henna red sure does look good and it really snaps out at ya with those sparkling white wheels in contrast!! I spend a lot of time just staring at the combo. It just hits one between the eyes. It polishes up well and even though LRB has lots and lots of blemishes and sandblasted spots on his paint especially on the front fairing front, he still looks fine and wins prizes too! Original paint is good to the extent that one can stand blemishes. I am tempted to get a new paint job done pretty soon. But hey, when I did the job on the steering head bearings I used a bungee cord to hold the handlebars out of the way and that removed a patch of paint that I didn't notice was happening at the time. Turning the bars this way and that caused the rub mark. So, I would have died a thousand deaths if the paint was pristine.
An artist once told me years ago when I had my first henna red LS that henna red is the one red that doesn't fade as much as the others. Henna is less affected by the suns rays. Sure seems to be so.
1983 R65LS - LRB still my favourite!? 1988 Honda NX250, "Toodles Too" and a Suzuki DR650, "Calypso." All stored in the "Brrrmmm Closet".

So, I made a decision and my BMW mechanic has helped.   He likes classic original BMW's.  He has agreed to "fully" participate in my project.  So while he does ALL of the mechanical refurbishing from front to rear, from spline to wheel bearings, front spings to rear icons, from new rotars to tranny lube to tank clean and purge...

seat is going for recovering and foam R/R, wheels are going for white powder-coating before new macadams, and ALL parts to be painted will visit a fine painter for fresh HennaRed as per original.  And when that stuff gets done in next few weeks,  All new muffler parts will be here from Germany for the reassembly.

Oh yeah...I'm excited! 8-)  I do think bar end mirrors will replace originals, but otherwise bike will look like original, and run real well, NO doubt.

What I lack in skill, I make up for in cash... money well spent for years of pleasure envisioned, God willing.

Glad to see that you are going to stick with the henna/white/flat black color scheme.  That is a sharp classic look that's hard to beat.   8-)

Monte,

This guy ain't getting rich on me.  Flipping a few $K around is another way I like to help our society.  Doctoring another.  My varied hobbies keep things interesting.

I am really looking forward to riding it...because, I LOVE TO RIDE!!!, and miss my airhead.  Thats me leading rides at mid-ohio vintage days a few years ago.  The other pic is of my buddy Thomas and I out on an early Sunday morning jaunt thru the state park.
