Tank leakage - tank problems
« on: February 10, 2008, 02:09:48 AM »
Hi everyone,

My tank has two problem.

a.First, it “ooze” gasoline under it. It hasn't hole below but there is a zone under the tank, at the connection between two face (left side and below side), where there is a leakage of gasoline from inside to outside the tank. Do you know how I could fix this problem?

b.Second. My tank has some “collision” zone on the right side. In other words the right side of the tank is not “flat” as it was at the beginning. Do you know how I could fix this problem?

Hoping you will help me, I send you best regards from Rome!!
Luigi

Your tank is probably corroded from the inside due to water from condensing, and either you buy a new tank from ebay, where tanks for r65'es  often are for sale - the price will be around 40-50 euros - or you line the inside of the tank with an epoxy liner. I lined mine four years ago and it is still tight. See http://www.tannis.dk/bmw/diary-5.htm

Try the following sites:  www.tankcure.com and www.elpe-motoproducts.nl

Hi trolle!

Tanks for answer! I 've one more question for you: the cockpit windscreen.

I got a windscreen very similar to your: it come from an R80 BMW, I think.
Reading your site I didn’t understood how you cleaned the window surface. Did you use a car polish (like wax)? Or what?

best regards!
Luigi

I used a polisher for the rear windows of convertibles, you can get it in car supply store. It removes the small scratches and makes the surface clean. If your screen is as old as mine and has spend its life in the Italian sun it is probably filled with minute cracks and this cannot be helped.

See http://www.tannis.dk/bmw/diary-3.htm and http://picasaweb.google.com/petertrolle

As I am 1.85 m of height the old screen was too low to my liking, I got the wind thrown in at my breast and throat, so I ordered a higher screen from a firm in the USA. I am sorry that I cannot find the address but try "googling"

greetings from a still foggy north

I sealed the tank on the wifes Zephyr after the tank rusted inside enough to turn the fuel into an orange goo, that clogged her carbs. The sealer I used is called Kreem, and cost about £30 ($60) and its a three part treatment, which you need to bake for about 40 mins in a warm oven to cure the sealer.

Although it was a little bit of an embuggerance, with the cleaner treatment needing to dry off  before, degreaser went it, it was pretty straight forwards, and since the kit contaned enough to do two tanks I've also done the RT.

The Kreem product is quite popular here in North America for this type of application, but I didn't know that it was available in Europe -
that is good news !!

I have read a lot of grumbling about Kreem so I have never tried it.  I have lined two tanks with the POR-15 kit and it works very well.  They claim that you can actually repair small holes as well and it comes with some cloth/fiberous material to use on the larger holes.  I have not done any holes or leaky tanks so I can't really comment.  There is also an epoxy product from Caswell Plating that I have read positive experiences about.

I recently purchased a kit from Eastwood (http://www.eastwoodco.com) that I plan to use on the "Junkyard LS".  I don't like to "experiment" with unknowns when I have a solution I know will work but the Eastwood kit was on sale at the time and they have always carried only very high quality automotive restoration stuff.

i am like justin, heard to many things about Kleem so i stayed away. also used POR-15. that is some good stuff, expensive, but nice. also it is silver color so it looks like the tank is super clean inside and its really sealed.

I am a firm believer in the POR-15 paint products - if I ever have to use a tank liner (hoping that I won't, but ya never know) I'll give their product a try..

See this one on ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320212891912&ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:DE:1123

No bumps, no collision (mine has also bumps and collision) and no rust inside!
I think is cheaper than work on mine.

Probably, especially if you don't do your own work.  Be advised, however, that re-lining the "new" tank may still be necessary even though it might not leak as the stock lining might be starting to deteriorate.

i do have a tank that i wont be using! it has no dings, the inside is nice and clean, fresh new custom paint, i would even sell it with the cap and petcock.

pm me and we could work out the price and shipping and such. it would be my black tank on my bike with the pearl white swoop.
