I finally mastered it!
« on: September 19, 2008, 11:21:31 PM »
It's amazing what you can do when you have to.  The battery in my car died a fast death.  It worked on Monday, but Tuesday morning the battery was dead!  Nada!  Nothing!  No spark of life even to lock the doors (the multi tester showed 8.3 volts when I tested it that night)  So, instead of calling AAA and waiting for another hour to get to work, I remembered [smiley=idea2.gif] that I had another source of transportation - my lovely R65.  No problem!  I just had to get my riding gear on and turn the bike around, and I woud only be a little late for work.  I'd deal with getting the bike back in when I got  home.

The ride went well, even though a bit cold (the first cold weather since spring, of course) and I was just 15 minutes late.  Then it was time to go home.  Those of you who've been on the forum for awhile know that I've had a bit of a problem getting the bike back into my patio area where I have to keep it.  But I gathered my courage (and waited until no one was around   ::) ), got out the ramp I have to get over the curb, and just steady as she goes made it up the ramp and onto the sidewalk.  Then turned left up the little hill and the tight quick right turn through the gate (oops, gotta stop and turn the mirrors up), okay and over the next bump onto the concrete pad and I'm in.  I only stalled it 3 times.   ::).

But I did it!!!    [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]
And I didn't take out that bush again!  Hey, it was even easy.  Now I'm embarrased about how long it took to get my courage up to try it again.

I couldn't get a battery that day, but my friend said he'd get me a battery and put it in for me but couldn't do it until Thursday.  That's okay.  I can do this now!  I have other modes of transportation.   ;D

I was ready for Wednesday.  I remembered to take the things I forgot on Tuesday (reading glasses, cell phone, money) and got prepared the night before.  But I still had to turn the bike around in the morning.  It's a bit tight there on the patio.  I was ready to go on time though and even though overcast, it was a bit warmer.   Of course, I had errands to do on my lunch hour that day, so I got a nice ride in during the day too.  The ride home was nicer, and I set up the entrance a little better so it went much better.  But the weather forecast is for rain on Friday afternoon.  After no rain since May, I didn't want to be out on the roads with all that oil with even a little bit of water, so I was glad to be having the battery in my car the next day.

I was even more prepared Thursday.  I had the bike turned around right Wednesday night and in the morning it was a perfect get away.  I've never had to have things just right to get out so early and be somewhere on time on the bike.  It was perfect, but even colder.   My friend got the battery in my car and I rode out and met him for a nice lunch (why is lunch only 1 hour?).  I could have traded the bike for the car then, but the day had turned out so nice that there was no way I was going to give up a little ride.  When I did get home and put the bike away it went so smooth.  I finally mastered it!   8-)

I know, I know.  A long story for something so mundane.  But to me this was a huge milestone.  I mastered something that had me stymied.  I finally got enough experience in the basic stuff and now I can just do those and start concentrating on the subtelties of clutch/brake/throttle.  I think the time I had off the bike let things settle in to my body.  Now I'm ready to go on to another level.

Melena,
I'm inspired by your account to get out of my car commute rut and start taking the R65 instead! I've always thought it would be a hassle to have everything set to go in the morning. Your account makes it seem worth while to swap out my briefcase for a tank bag! Thanks for the inspiration.

It IS a hassle, Rich.  It's just that it's worth it.

Congrats on the milestone Melena!!  I completely understand your elation.  It's always that slow, tight maneuvering that is so scary to me.  The bike seems so big at those times and the ground so far away.  ::)  I think you were smart to wait until you didn't have to think about the little things anymore so you could concentrate on the tactics needed to accomplish your mission.  Hip, hip, HOORAY!!  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I think riding to work would be fabulous, but it's the cages through the middle of town that keeps mine in the garage.

I think that you might need one of those 'turn-table' thingies that Sue was talking about a year or so ago, where one could drive in, but the bike on its centerstand on the mat, and be able to just spin it right around so it would be facing back out the door again ! :)

Nhmaf has a good point Melena! Turn that bike around where it stops and point it in the other direction. Boy, it is great news to hear that you overcame your difficulties with that durn curb and tight turns. I sure know where you are coming from!!!! Good on ya!!!  Do you have enough room to actually turn your bike on it's centrestand??

Good for you, Melena!

I have been commuting to work ever since I got my first bike, so I never would have thought about the considerations!

Preparation has taken longer over the years as I have added things like ear plugs and riding pants, and it will ALWAYS be more hassle than the car; but on days when I DO take the car, and the weather is dry all day, I somehow feel robbed of something as I sit in work, thinking of going home, and how boring that car will be.

Congratulations on mastering the "driveway"!   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Like Ed Miller said, it is a hassle, Rich.  But some days it is really worth it.   But if I don't get up in time in the morning, I don't have time to get all my gear on and get out.  I won't ride without ATGATT.  So, I won't ride every day.  And I won't ride in the winter when it's cold and dark when I leave for work and come home.  It's just a really good feeling to know I can do it now.

Why thanks!   :D   Don't be in too much awe though.  I can be a real wimp too.   :-/

That's right!  Bill is the only one on this forum that's seen my setup.   He knows!   ;)

Foot is doing much better, thank you!  Better every day.  There is still stiffness and some swelling but I can wear my boots, and that's what counts.   ;D

Thanks everyone.   I'm just glad I don't live at the bottom of a hill with a 1/4 mile gravel driveway.   :o

I've been trying to figure out this turning around thing.  I had it set up better last summer, but since I couldn't get out until just recently, I didn't do that this year.  In the winter the bike lives in one of those cycle shelters.  The floors on those aren't very stiff and they have an air space under them so when the bike is in it the floor is bent down.   There isn't room to turn the bike around on the center stand when it's on the shelter floor even with the top pushed all the way back.

What I want to do is have a summer set up where the cycle shelter is folded up and put away and I just have a shade tarp put up and get a bike cover to put over the bike to protect it from dust.  Then I think one of those turn table thingies like Sue made would work great on the concrete.  I think I'll see if I can do a deal with her to get her to make one for me.   ;D

I'll ride to work more next summer when the days are long again.  It's already starting to get cold this year and the rains will be here soon.  At this time, my commute is only 5 miles, and I don't have to ride through the middle of town or on the freeway.   At this time of year I'd rather use my riding time on the nice weekends having fun.   8-)

It's always great to hear people overcoming their problems.

when i read it out to my wife and mentioned someone suggested a "turn table thingie" she asked "you mean like a lazy susan?"

I'm always complaining about not having enough space at home but from what you've just described I'll have to rethink my situation. I've got a double carport and 10foot square garden shed for two bikes, two cars and assorted spare parts and gardening accessories. Obviously I have plenty of room now that I compare it.

As for being a hassle riding to work, I'm sure it will be worth it when I get mine on the road.
At the moment I drive the Valiant everyday and fellow co-workers ask how I cope living so far away from work. (Mind  you it's ONLY a 20 min drive) the rest all live 5 to 10 min's away, Darwin realy is a small city (population 100,000). For me in the right vehicle it's 20 minutes of unwinding from work. I tell them they drive to work, I cruise to work. And I'm sure the R65 will be even better.

I feel sorry for you with your cold winter, we don't have Winter, Summer, Spring and autumn.
Here our seasons are Wet Season, Dry Season.
Dry Season is 15degC to 32degC and Wet Season is 28degC to 34degC high humidity with Monsoonal showers in the afternoon.

No matter the effort it always feels worth it when you're on the road.

I ride my bike 14 miles to work almost every day and have found that keeping a spare rain suit and shirt in my locker can be a real life saver with Texas weather.
