wa hooo!!!!

i got my R-stamp cert today!!! 8-)

it only took 7 hours to do :( almost 2 hours of exams, 2 hours of oral exam and 3 hours of welding in all types of positions and materials, and then all the welds where x-rayed!!!! very cool

an r-stamp certification means that i can now weld on explosive pressure vessels!!!! like propane tanks and fuel tanks and the fed says i know what i am doing. this is a huge help to my employeer, he has never had a r-stamp welder in shop before, and when i found that out i set off to become one. plus it looks good to the guys i lead out in the shop. plus it makes me get out in the shop and weld from time to time instead of driving the desk and being steered around by the darn phone.

i have welded on "LIVE" pipe lines when i was in the service. live, yep when you strike a arc and you have around 200 psi of pressure coming out a hole in a pipe line it throws a flame a good 20 ft till i weld it closed. i never had to have a r-stamp to do that sort of work cuz i was in the service and the gov has different rules for themselves compared to the public.

funny you say that rob, i just had my review on friday. since i started as service manager for the company i have made some changings in the right direction, our re-work numbers where 1 in 5 before i started, that is for every 5 trucks we worked on or built 1 would come back for the same work within a week, since i took over the operations last august the re-work numbers have dropped steady our new numbers are 1 in 15262. i also was able to get the inventory under control and the oem warranty work pay out to nearly 125000 per month. the owner was happy with what i have done and showed it with a 25%!!!!! increase in my salary. no kidding 25%!!!

this year i am working on getting new customers and winning over old customers we have lost in the last 10 years, that will be the real callange.

when i started the shop was a real mess and the guys where nearly unmanagable, it took time and showing them i was not like the others before me and spend alot of time on the floor and checking all work before it leaves the shop, i had some long days, nights and some weekends. the guys came around and now i find very little wrong with the work they do. i had to only fire one person, that was the biggest surprise to the owner, i was able to get them to take some pride in what they do and it has showed.

today was again a step to show the guys what we can do and where the company is going.
