Guage rebuilders
« on: February 28, 2008, 06:41:49 PM »
I'm going to need to send my /2 gauge out to be redone before to much longer. Do you guys know of any options other than Palo Alto and North Hollywood? I am looking for personal experience not just "check out this site". Staying pretty much original but will need to be alterd for the R65 final drive, which brings up another ?

What is the final drive on a 79 R65?

Thanks, Scott

So, you putting a /2 speedon on the '65?  I think all R65s came with a 32/9 final drive, the '80 out on the lift does anyway...  You got any pix of your mod to be?

Nothing recently but this was a month or 2 ago. You'll get the idea ;)I have since changed to a MUCH nicer set of aluminum headlight mounts. Coils are mounted on the frame outside of the battery, wiring harness is in pieces to be redone, tank has been stripped, primed, bondoed and blocked once. I trashed the original fairing and started on a new aluminum one friday night. I just wasn't happy with the way the first one in steel; turned out. I'm a bit of an anal perfectionist. It's what I do......... :-/

Cool!  So, it's like a /5 bucket with the speedo and tach built into the top?  Looks slick...

No tach on the /2 it's just a speedo. I'll try and remember to get a pic of it later this week. Off whiter face with black lettering, has a bit of an art decoish style to it. I'm a sucker for that stuff :)

Scotty, Bob's BMW in MD also does gauge rebuilds, has for years, if they're any closer than the Palo Alto folks to you...

I took my bike in to bobs for the md state inspection. After he gave me the list of repairs, I had to wait a week for them to order a rotor. I asked if I could bring the speedo somewhere else. He gave me Palo Altos number and said, "we'd send it to this guy anyway".

Scotty, it would certainly be worth a call to Bobs to see if they do farm out all of their gauge work to Palo Alto.

If I remember correctly, the last catalog I got from them, 2006 I believe, offered their services as an alternative to the West Coast. Maybe that's changed?

Not to doubt your experience, Mikey, just sayin' it couldn't hurt to ask... :-/

One thing ive noticed about shops is that mechanics come and go. Ive been to bobs only about 4 times in the last year. They may very well have a gauge guy since I was there.
I also just ran through ebays r65 stuff. I saw 2 80-85 tachs and 2  speedos.

Speedo pic. The new mounting ears are a bit longer and hopefully will move the headlight bucket out another 1/2" or more so it will clear the tree  ;)
