New Airhead book (with some R65 stuff)
« on: November 09, 2007, 06:51:54 AM »
I noticed the other day while looking through the November issue of the BMW Owner's News that there was a book review on Airheads that may be worth adding to your collection (for those that have a BMW book collection).  It's entitled, "BOXER - from /5" written by Andy Schweitzer.  It was originally published in German text version in 2006, but the author decided to release an English language version this year.

It's 165 pages in length and basically concentrates on the BMW Boxers manufactured from 1969 through 1985. (This  book also has on the cover "Vol. 1 - all Airheads with twin shocks)

The reason I took notice is there appears to be at least a chapter that focused on the R45/65/LS.  Here is what was said in the review:

The chapter devoted solely to the R45/R65 series will have loads of information for the devotees of those models.  It ends with the interesting quote from one designer "...it was a pity that we didn't make any money on this bike."

According to the review, there is even a "colors' section that even provides a full color printed swatch of every color and combination that was available through the model years.

Of course, the majority of the book covers the rest of the Airhead line produced during those years, but it still seems like it might be worth looking into!  ;)

It's available through:
www.OMEGA-ignitions.com
95 Westwood Crescent
Cambridge, ON   N1S3V7
Canada
(519) 740-2841

Cost:  $55 ppd to USA or Canada

I tried to attach a pic of the book cover, but kept getting error messages.  I'll try again in a separate post:

Were R65s cheaper than the other boxers?  Because I certainly don't see why they would cost any less to build.  Sounds like a good book but I'll have to wait until it shows up in my favorite book store, Goodwill.   ;D

Ed the list price for the R65 in 1981 was $3295, I think the R100 was around $5500.

I was contemplating buying an R100 instead of an R65, and couldn't afford the higher price at the time.

I could be off on that price for the R100 though.

Oooh! I saw that book at Ken's last month, brought down from Ontario by Mr. Omega Inition.

Very nice airhead coffee table book but I didn't get to the R65 pages.
