My BMW R 71 Replica is running......
« on: December 26, 2006, 02:09:08 PM »
..... for the first time! :D

Hi folks!

I´m very happy, because the R71 Replica, which I try to restore, has made a big step forward to get on the road. On 12-23-06, 6:00 PM,  it was the first time that the Seitenventiler-engine was running.

I bought the motorcycle on February this year and have spent hundreds, maybe thousands of hours in my garage to get it reanimated. I´ve had many failures, bloody fingers, grumbling wives, empty purses, badly surprises and sleepless nights.

I´ve ripped off all russian screws (Stalin´s revenge ;D), wiring harnesses, bowden cables and roller bearings. I´ve done all by myself. The motorcycle was painted with spray cans.

But now, all pain is forgotten. :) After the fourth kick on her kickstarter, the engine started to run. It was a great feeling for me.

So here are some pictures.

I got my Ludmilla in this condition. I bought the bike on ebay, but I was shocked when I saw it for the first time:

But - as I said - all pain is forgotten now.  :D I took this pictures on the 26th of December on a cold but shiny morning.

Regards

Dirk

Fantastic, Dirk!  Congratulations!!  It will be great to see you document the progress you make in getting the bike fully restored.  You're a great photographer!  I wish I were lucky enough to have a bike like yours to restore.  The one old Beemer I have always wanted to own is an R26 or R27.  I love the idea of a shaft-driven single cylinder bike, and one of these days, I intend to own one!  I think it would be so cool to ride around one one of those beauties!  8-)

John, yes, the old single-cylinders look great. But I wonder that you like these small engines. I´ve allways thought that the 250cc engines don´t fit to "the American way of Life. You have Harley Davidsons with huge and mighty engines. The small beemers seem to be toys, compared to your big bikes, dont´t they? ;D

Yeah, Dirk, for most folks a 250cc bike would be just too small for riding around on.  I don't think I would want a 250cc size bike as my primary source of transporation, but I think it would be a blast to have one to cruise around on on those lazy summer afternoons when you don't have anywhere in particular to go and don't have to be in any sort of rush to get there!  8-)

Well, we chose to ride BMW's smallest twin, for the most part.  I think that explains a lot of my remark.

I, for one, am not a physically large person, and I have always gravitated toward smaller things.
I remember when I first graduated from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts, my father opened the catalog and asked me which sheath knife (hunting knife) I wanted.  I chose the smaller of the two...

I love my small cars (currently a '88 Honda Civic), and I am disgusted by the phrase "bigger is better".

But don't go by me.  I am weird.

Which one do you have, Rob? For 135 film? I own a 35PL but I am not satisfied. I prefer the Rollei 35 for taking along as my worker. I heard the 35GT is better than the PL wich has problems with the timing.
 :)

Hi guys and gals,

I wish you a happy new year!  :)

Here are some pictures of the process of getting the russian monster restored. Hope you like it. :)

When I got the K750, my wife was very angry >:(. But she got the order to help me with the restoration, and she even had fun thereby.

The only way to handle all that junk was to ripp it off.

And I  had spare parts for worse times. ;)

Now there´s no rust left on the frame:

It was all in my face:

As I said, some spare parts......

New rear brakes.

Hell´s kitchen. :D

Never again russian roller bearings  >:(

The heart is going to be implantated.

I installed new pistons. I don´t have  a technical profession and no experiences in doing that. This technology is so simple that everyone can control it.

Here the cylinders got polished:

A really cool guy:

Thank you, Russia, for this wiring plan. ;D

Mmmmphhhfff  >:(

My workshop:

Removing the ventiles:

Polishing the ventile into the seat.

Adjusting the ventiles.

Inside the gearbox:

Clutch-troubleshooting:

Mmmmpfhhhh part II:

The flywheel:

A new exhaust system with fishtails.

New carburetors:

I try to get oil into the engine. :(

But after all: the happy end. ;D

Dirk

Dirk, I'm glad that you are still alive, I recognize that "look" on your wife's face  :o  and it usually equates to a cold supper and a sphere of evil "vibes" once within 10 feet or so of said spouse!   :P

You have make extraordinary progress in a short period of time.

Nice job, Dirk!  I really like the clamp that you used to free the oil filler cap!

Fantastic, Dirk! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]  Color me green with envy!  Do you have an estimate of about how much this resoration has cost you? I'm just curious.... (or nosy, depending on your point of view) ::)
