Back from the Int'l Motorcycle Show in Atlanta!

"So many motorcycles, so little time..."

All I can say after getting back home from the International Motorcycle Show is,  "Wow!"   :o

Pattimarie and I spent this Saturday and Sunday in Atlanta, and went to the 17th Annual International Motorcycle Show, which was held at the World Congress Trade Center.  The biggest problem we had was navigating thru the Atlanta traffic on a Saturday morning and finding a place to park.  Let me tell you, the complex that houses the WCTC also has the Georgia Dome AND the Georgia Aquarium, and the place is absolutely H-U-G-E!!!  We managed to get a space in the Handicapped parking area thanks to Pattimarie's handicapped sticker and "thought" we had a prime time parking space.  Unfortunately, it turned out that we had parked mext to the Georgia Dome instead of thw WCTC, and still had to walk a helluva long way just to get to the building that held the bike show, and even then we walked, and walked, and walked inside before going down three long escalators that led to the gigantic show area where the show was laid out in all its splendor.  The combination of colors from all the various manufacturers with their huge banners, signs, and shiny bikes everywhere and the crowd noise of the throngs of people already there milling about (we didn't get in to the show until about 11:30am and the show opened that day at 9:30) was overwhelming!

"So, this is what heaven is like!" , I joked to Pattimarie as we walked past the Buell Display, the first bike maker to greet us as we walked in.  It was difficult to decide which direction to go, there was so much to see.  The "big four" bike manufacturers (Honda, Yamaha/Star, Suzuki, and Kawasaki all had enormous and brightly lit display areas that one could see from anywhere in the hall.  I looked off in the distance and could see the BMW display area, so we decided that would be the first stop.

BMW's area had a classy, "euro" feel to it.  The entire bike lineup for 2007 was spaced out in a huge circle that ran the perimeter of the display area.  I found the new F800ST and F800S bikes and sat on each, and noted the displays of the instrumentation panel, which I liked.  The new F650 trio of bikes designed to attract the "Gen-Y" young biker was also on display, and I sat on each of those as well, but found the saddle height too high for my liking.  Slick looking bikes, though.  They also had displays of cutaway engines of the K1200, and F800 engines there, as well as a front suspension system of the K1200 so one could see on what principle it worked that made it better than the usual forks.

They had a drawing for a "Win the BMW of your dreams" contest going on, so both PM and I filled out an entry form and dropped it in the slot.  (Who knows - maybe I'll be the one out of a bazillion entries to win!)  ::)

After about a half hour milling about the BMW area, we moved on and walked past the Victory booth, so Pattimarie could see the bike of her dreams, the "8-Ball".  She sat on it, and I could see the slightest spark in her eyes that told me that maybe, just maybe, she might want to get another bike.  We also checked out Victory's new entry in the touring wars with the Goldwing and the Electra-Glide, the new "Vision".  It had some really swoopy lines and looked like something from a Buck Rogers movie.  Pretty to look at, but not my cup of tea.  They'll probably sell a boatload of them, though.

We also passed by the Honda display (not surprisingly, the biggest display there) and then walked through the Yamaha/Star booth and Suzuki booth, where PM saw what "used" to be her ride, the LS650 Savage, now called the M40.  She had a "sentimental moment" sitting on it, reflecting on the fun she had on the bike over the past couple of years before it got smashed in her accident.  She then proceeded to talk to a young woman who was looking at the bike and told her how "perfect" the bike was for a new rider.    I think she still has the "fever" for another bike, if you ask me.

The one other display I wanted to make sure I visited was the Moto-Guzzi display, which was nestled in with the Aprilia, Vespa, and Piaggio product area.  I've been lusting after a new Breva 750, and sat on it and noted how close to the R65 the Breva is, in weight, seat height, wheelbase and overall feel.  They also had one of their new sport-touring bikes, the Norge 1200, pretty in silver, as well as a Griso 1100, the larger Breva 1100, the Nevada 750 Classic cruiser, and of course, their flagship, the California 1100 EV "Vintage".  They also had this neat area where you could get your photo taken against a "green" background (like they use in the movies) and then you could choose one of four backgrounds and have your photo put on that.  I chose a western desert background with a Griso 1100 to "stand beside".  The girl took my photo and then printed out a little card and gave it to me, which told me to go to a website and type in the code number which was on the card, and then you could print out your picture.  (Naturally, the story of my life, when I got back home and tried to print out the picture, I kept getting an error message saying the code was invalid.)  Oh well, it wasn't like I paid for the photo!

Part Two of this report to follow shortly!  ;)

Sounds like you two had a great time at the show, John.
Very envious here: wish like hell I kept up with these things better!
Please do continue on with Part II, and III, IV & V too if there's more to tell! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

PS: How'd you like the new F800ST?  Could you see yourself living with one, or was it too "foreign"?
And the Guzzi Norge; now there's a transcontinental missile, isn't it??

Yeah, Steve, the show was a blast!

That F800ST is going to be a big success for BMW, I feel.  If a set of bar backs can be made to fit the bike, I think I'd be pretty damn tempted to start riding one!  The F800S had me sitting in a little too much of a hunched over position for my tastes.

I'll wrap up my take on the bike show later today.  I don't want to bore anyone with my rambling, so I'll be succinct.  Bottom line is: Everyone should go at least once!  ;)

OK, I guess I'll finish up with my little nickel and dime report of the big bike show my wife and I attended in Atlanta on Saturday....

Naturally, we had to visit the "dark side" and look at the Harleys there, which seemed to number in the hundreds. (I know, they don't make that many models!)  The only Harley that has aroused any interest in me has been the V-Rod, since the harley engineers asked Porsche to help develop that powerplant.  They have a new model called the "Night Rod", which was sitting there, that I found attractive.  Almost everything on the bike was blacked out (read:  no blinding chrome!), and it had a fairly comfortable sitting position.  I admit that "if I won the lottery"  ::), I'd be tempted to have one of these bad boys in my garage.  It looked kind of like some kind of stealth fighter, all in matte black!

We got over the Harley fever pretty quickly, and proceeded to check out the Ducati booth (complete with beautiful blonde babes manning the greeting stand).  Lots of red everywhere, and there were a couple of "retro" bikes inside that did look mighty nice.

The Kawasaki booth featured the new Concours (with the ZX-14 engine in it) that had a lot of folks standing around it, drooling all over the railing that separated it from the onlookers.  As with Honda, Suzuki, and Yamaha (er, I mean, "Star"), there were cruisers galore at the Kawasaki display.  Honestly, I can't figure out how these manufacturers can sell all of these bikes that don't differ too much from each other, except they don't say "Harley" on the gas tank.

We visited the BMWMOA booth, where I renewed my membership and got a free T-shirt from the rally held in Spokane a couple of years ago.  And it turned out that one of our local BMW club members was manning the booth there, which was a pleasant surprise (and she slipped my wife a Spokane T-shirt as well!)

We also saw the "world's fastest motorcycle", a very, very long red missle on two wheels that the sign said went something like 352 mph at the Bonneville salt flats.  (Yikes!!  :o )

There were supposed to some vintage bikes on display somewhere in the hall, but we never found them.  We did see a very pretty red 1968 BMW R69US, and a 1951 Vincent Black Widow (which really looked wicked!).

The people milling about were also fun to check out.  Most of them could be ID'd as to their "brand of choice" by their clothing, naturally.  Lots of "black and orange", doo-rag-and leather-chapped wearing guys and gals, the husband/wife lookalike combo that screamed "GoldWing!", and the nattily-attired sophisticate dressed in expensive clothing that sported the small-but-obvious BMW Roundel somewhere.  I saw a couple of Hell's Angels there (well, at least they were wearing a jacket, and I asume you can't get those by mail order) who were checking out the latest no-baffle exhaust systems on display.

We managed to stay about 4-1/2 hours, and ate some $8.50 a bowl jumbalaya, and finally decided to call it a day when Pattimarie confessed that her knee was beginning to bother her.  I was proud of her, though.  She walked a helluva lot more than I thought she would, without a peep of a complaint.  We still had to walk about another mile to get to our car, but once we got back to the Double Tree Hotel, she got to relax and felt better, and we later treated ourselves to a first class meal at a really nice restaurant by the name of PF Chang's, where I had perhaps the spiciest beef I have ever tasted (hurt so good!)

Folks, next year, if the International Motorcycle Show comes somewhere near where you live, I highly recommend checking it out.   More bikes there to lust after than you can shake a dipstick at, and besides, it's "fun to fantasize!" [smiley=naughty.gif]

Sounds like a fantastic experience!  I've always wanted to go to the one in Atlanta, but it used to be the 2nd week in January and I was always in Atlanta over Christmas, so the timing was just a bit off.  One day...

The V-Rod is also the only Harley I'd be interested in.  I love the looks of it and I might could flat foot that one.  It would be nice to go where you could check out all the new bikes in one place, especially if you're in the market for a new one.  That way you could sit on them all and touch and feel the ergonomics, etc of each one.  So how tall was the F800?  Did it feel light?  I'm itching to see one.  March will be here soon and maybe they'll get one ot the dealership quickly.  I would also be interested in seeing the new Kawasaki Ninjas.  I've read that they are very lightweight and have a relatively short seat height.

Also glad to here you got such positive responses out of Pattimarie.  You never know, give her some time and if she had a real love for riding, that doesn't go away.  It's just the fear you have to get past.  I know all about that.    It took me 7 years to ride again after my first get off.    Partly because the opportunity wasn't there.  It still sneaks up on me every now and again, but it doesn't keep me from riding!

Thanks for the report!  It's fun experiencing it even if only 2nd hand...not like being there!

So Aida, you're hearing that the new F800s are still on track for a March debut?
Any word about the 800 "standard" or the rumored GS, or are we still looking at the S and ST for now?
Please keep us posted, okay?? Thanks!

When I was sitting on the F800ST at the show, I thought that it was about an inch taller than the seat on my Britta (I think the specs mention a 31-1/2 in. seat height).   I couldn't flat-foot the bike, but could at least get both feet on the floor while sitting on it!  I think a "low seat" is an option which lowers the seat by about one inch.

That V-Rod does indeed have a LOW seat, too, Aida!  About 27 inches off the floor, as I recall.  Kind of wide, though.  They make a V-Rod with mid-mounted controls and another one (I think it was the Night Rod) that has forward-mounted controls.  Maybe one of these days I'll actually take one out for a spin!  [smiley=happy.gif]

Bob Wooldridge (BMW Motorcycles of Atlanta owner) stated at the show that that they should see their first F800's within the next week or two. They'll go into immediate duty as demo bikes with the first saleable units being available approx. the first week or so of April. The F800 price sheet shows it being offered with numerous accessories (i.e. heated grips, ABS, rider information computer, centerstand, alarm, etc.) priced seperately like the rest of the BMW line-up. A quick retail add-up of an F800ST + ABS + heated grips + trip computer + saddlebags + centerstand came in around 13K.

The Atlanta Show was somewhere around double the size of last year. Very cool.

Aida, should Capital BMW find itself needing some test floggers for the early demo F800s, please put my name in the hat and contact me immediately, okay? I'd be only too happy to take 2-3 weeks off work and ride these things as close to 24/7 as humanly possible, and give any constructive feedback required. I would also be willing to abuse all types of optional gear and accessories, for as long as necessary.
Thanks a bunch.  ;) ::) [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

[smiley=Oscar.gif]  Yeah, me too!   :D  Each dealer handles the demos their own way.  Capitol usually has demo rides available on Saturdays and they are escorted at that.    I'll put your name in the hat and see what happens!   [smiley=ROTFLMAO.gif]

That's right...  [smiley=nopity.gif]
