Britta's new Plexi-Fairing 3 windshield arrived!

Yee-Ha!!  Last weekend, I ordered a new National Windshields "Plexi-Fairing 3" windshield to replace the one that came with the bike when I bought it back in 2003, and it arrived today!

I know, it is huge compared to the little windscreen that's on it right now, and most riders don't want a windshield that big on their bike, but for me, it will be a blessing!  Riding Britta EVERY SINGLE DAY (rain, shine, freezing, etc.) means putting up with a lot of cold and rain on me, and at my age, it's not as much fun as it used to be.  Having a nice protective pocket to ride behind will be a very welcome change.  (Of course, I'll keep the little windscreen around to put on during the summer months, when I don't have to be such a weenie!)

Well, it took about 45 minutes to install the windshield, and the instructions weren't that clear or helpful.  But having owned a Plexi-Fairing 3 before, I pretty much knew how it had to be placed on the bike, so I guess it wasn't that bad afterall.  It would have been nice to have an extra set of hands to help, though!  

I hope these photos will post OK.  Just a couple of views of the windshield, plus one from the rider's perspective!

OK, I took Britta out for a 15 minute "shakedown" cruise up to the post office, just to make sure the windshield seemed secure and balanced properly on the handlebars, and the bike seemed to ride sure and steady, which made me feel good.  What felt even better, though, was the absence of cold wind on my chest, neck, hands and knees!   Ahhhhh.......   What a relief!  [smiley=happy.gif]

I'll get a chance to really test it out this evening, since I have to go to school for my work-study shift from 4-10pm.  I'm sure the temp will be well below freezing by the time I saddle up to ride back home, and since it takes me about 45 minutes to get home from school, I should get a good feel for how much cold the windshield will block.  It will be nice not to arrive home without "numb knees"!!

It certainly looks better and weighs less than a Windjammer.  Are you going to do the test Duane A. describes for testing stability?  That IS a handlebar mounted fairing, isn't it?  I'm not sure.

Yeah, Ed, I think it fits the definition of handle-bar mount fairing to the tee.  I always liked my Windjammers but I think one should scrounge the necessary bits and install an RT fairing!    I saw Duane do that test a couple years ago on an old /5 with a handlebar mount fairing.  I don't know how he managed to keep from getting pitched off, and he was only going 30-40 mph, if that much.  I know it scared me just watchin'!  [smiley=shocked2.gif]

Yeah, it's handlebar-mounted, with additional supports on the fork slider-tubes.  I never had any problem with the windshield like this one that came with the bike when I bought it.  Of course, I've never really pushed Britta beyond about 70 mph anyway.  I don't foresee any problems with this windshield, provided I use some common sense when riding Britta. (But then again, I've never been known as someone who uses common sense regularly!)
