What kind of R45/R65/R65LS do you have?
« on: January 07, 2007, 10:50:22 PM »
With all of the LS owners popping up, I thought this would be an interesting poll.

If you have more than one kleineboxer, pick the one you ride most often.

If your spouse rides the R65, make her (I mean him or her) register on the forum and do her their own voting!  ::)

I'm there.

Actually Rob, whilst you were editing, it should have been "his or her own voting!"

No Major Softy on this forum.  I bet he needs an R65.

Ed..you just reminded me that Boxerworks is out there..major Softie and friends..and I cannot for the life of me get registered on that forum. Tried many times and it just goes around in circles.
1983 R65LS - LRB still my favourite!? 1988 Honda NX250, "Toodles Too" and a Suzuki DR650, "Calypso." All stored in the "Brrrmmm Closet".

The 70s model bikes use a point-type ignition control versus electronic starting in 1981.
Also, in the 80s, we had the arrival of the black plastic air boxes instead of the metal
ones, the addition of the "pulse air" plumbing system, carb changes, and I believe, differences in the
clutch/carrier assembly, speedos, fork (?) and internal transmission changes.

I am sure some other folks here can provide a more accurate list !

I borrowed this, but to paraphrase...
1981:
      •       Colors: turquoise blue, red, ?
      •       Dual front disk brakes with ATE calipers.
      •       Hundreds of small improvements to all BMW boxers, from which  the R65 benefitted as well. Major improvements:
      [ch9702]       Electronic ignition
[ch9702]       40% lighter flywheel (revs & shifts easier)
      [ch9702]       Nikasil lining in cylinders
[ch9702]       Plastic airbox & "pure air" system (allows richening of carburetion while still meeting emissions regulations)
[ch9702]       Larger valves (by 2mm each)
[ch9702]       Additional crossover pipe in exhaust
[ch9702]       Larger oil pan (increases oil capacity by .2 quart)
[ch9702]       More cushioning in driveshaft  Y throttle cable with splitter instead of two cables.  (Many don't consider this an improvement.)

1982:
      •       R65LS introduced.
      •       Slight carburetion changes (idle jet & needle position) to all R65s.
      •       Non-LS R65s all have a single front disk brake, with ATE caliper.
      •       R65LS gets the dual front disk brakes, with Italian Brembo calipers. (See r65ls.faq)

1983:
      •       Colors: turquoise, black, ?
      •       Every year, BMW fiddled with the needle position and idle jet on the carburetors, but these bikes remained basically the same.

1984:
Last year of R65LS and dual-shock R65 model.

Let me PM you the whole link, which this was just an excerpt from.
It's not earth-shaking info, but does give a pretty good overall view of the R65s by year.

Well I see the "R65 1981-1984" is half of the responses so far.  I'm a little surprised by that.  Should I be??

Come on folks, vote today!!

I guess we would have to compare them to the quantities imported/manufactured, but I am leaving for work in 8 minutes, so it will have to be left for someone else. :)

I voted early on.  I like the way this gives you the results as soon as you vote and then doesn't bring up the ballot again.  Can't vote twice.   ;)

I wanted to wait to comment until there was enough votes in.  I was surprised about the one R45 until I remembered that someone from (I forgot which country, I'm sorry) Europe has one and that there are many more of them in Europe than here in the US and Canada.  Isn't there anyone out there from this side of the pond with an R45?

But why so many more 81 - 84 R65's?  I thought there were more with the older models.  Maybe they just haven't voted yet.  There are 80 members now.

I just wish I had thought initially to encourage those who voted to also post a reply in the thread.  It would have been interesting to know who voted and what they ride.
