My introduction
« on: December 04, 2006, 02:29:39 PM »
Hi folks,

I would like to introduce myself. I followed the invitation of your member MrRiden and would like to join your forum. My name is Dirk, I´m 40 years old and live in North Germany, near Hamburg, were I work as a HR manager. I´m married and have 2 children (6 and 9 years old).

Rich (MrRiden) told us in the german forum for BMW R65, called " Kleine-Boxer-Forum from you and the BMW-community in the United States. That made me and my comrade Stefan (alias Kuzzimuzzi, which you already know) curious. So I came to you, too.

I ride a `81 BMW R 65. This motorcycle is also driven by my wife.

In addition I have an old `75 BMW R 75/6. In former times it was a green-white police bike.

No, the Stang belongs to a friend of mine. :(

At present I try to restore a Russian KMZ K750. It´s a copy of the pre-war BMW R 71.

I`ve bought it in that condition. It has been running in Latvia until this spring:

This picture was taken in november:

I´ve read many threads in your forum. It´s very interesting that you give your bikes german female names  like „Britta “  ;D
We do exactly the same with our Russian motorcycles, like Olga or Svetlana.  :-*

Have fun

Regards

Dirk

Welcome Dirk!

I really like the chrome headlight protector on your R65.  Is it a straight fit on from an old /2?  It really gives the bike a very classic look!  Love it.

Your restoration project is beautiful as well. It reminds me of the old /2s as well.

Welcome aboard and hope you contribute often.   :)

I think if one is looking for a colour to paint a Bronco Brown R65 that your pic will convince them that black with white pinstripes is georgeous. Well done on all your bikes.

Welcome..great to have an international community here!

Welcome Dirk!

Those are beautiful bikes.  You have certainly done a lot of work.  I love the black with white pinstripes.  I have an '83 and it has the original white and red pinstriping on black.  I keep thinking that I will change the color to blue, but the black is such a classic look.  It is nice to see such well cared for bikes.

Welcome, Dirk! Glad to have you aboard!

Yeah, I'm the idiot with a bike named "Britta"  ;D

I usually named most of my bikes, but especially the BMWs I have owned.  Back in 1997, I had another R65 (a nice 1981 model) before I got Britta, which I named "Bruno".  I regretted ever selling her.  (She only had 26,000 miles on her!)  Next year, I plan on purchasing a R1200C Classic cruiser (my dream bike), which I plan on naming "Sabine".  I'll hang on to Britta, though, and give her some well deserved time off.  Britta currrently has a little over 138,000 miles on her, and deserves to enjoy her "golden years".  ;)

Hope to see your posts here more often in the future!

Dirk,
Glad you found us! I really like the detail touches on your R65, the headlamp guard and signals. You mentioned having a police bike. I'm curious about the R65RT. I've never seen one here and can find only a few pictures on the net. Where these employed as police bikes? I'd like to find one to double my collection.

Hi alltogether,

thanx for your friendly welcome. :)
I´m glad, that there are so many friends of the small BMW-Boxers so far from home. ;)

@msbuck: My headlight protector is a new one. The old /2 BMWs are very rare, even in Germany. There is a restaurator near our home. He sells this old bikes. Sometimes you find /2 spare parts there. His garage is cleaner as a hospital:

@Justin B.: Is it possible, that you´ve just introduced the term "cow" to the new world?!? ;) ;D

@msbuck, suecanada, Melena: In the German Kleine-Boxer-Forum we have round about 1000 members. But only a view Ladies have signed up (my wife Sybille is one of them). I´m pleased, that there are so many women in this forum. I wish there were more female members in Germany. :'(

@SCJJR65: Oh no, you´re not an idiot because of calling your bike "Britta". It´s absolutely ok.  :) It´s much better than Bruno, because the heavy artillery guns of the German WWII battleships were called "Bruno". ::) ;) In my opinion a motorcycle must have a traditional female name. So Britta and Sabine fit absolutely. :)

@MrRiden: Yes, you are right, the R65 RT is very rare. A comrade from the Kleine-Boxer-Forum rides that cow. I know that it was sold to the German and French police.

On this picture you can see Tekin, the owner of the police-cow. He´s standing next to my wife.

His bike. I´m not quite sure, but I think it´s called R65 tic

This photo was taken at the meeting of some members of the Kleine-Boxer-Forum in 2006:

And that unlucky guy in the background, that´s me. I caused all that terrible damage. :-X On that day I was hung, drowned and quartered. :o

Ouch, like dominoes!  You guys must have a much more populated forum than this one, that's a lot of bikes.  Does the Boxerworks phorum even get that many together in a group?
Welcome to this forum and we hope you enjoy it!

You won't like the name for my bike.  I don't usually name vehicles, but I finally decided to call it the Black Pearl.  I need a Jolly Roger, I guess.

Yes, Great Photos!  We had a guy in our local BMW club that did the same thing you did.  His nickname now is "Domino".
It wasn't a pretty picture!  Those /2s are beautiful!!  I'll have to show my hubby those pics so he can drool as well...

We actually have a fair number of women riders in our local BMW club.  We had a few that stepped up early and started riding our own back in the early 80s.  We then organized a "LOCO" Ladies Only Camp Out where we encouraged each other.  And our numbers grew quickly.  It's great to have fellow female riders around to share experiences.  I think it is different for us than for the males.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for your interests and compliments.  :)

The /2 is the first 2-Cyl-motorcycle made by BMW after the war. It´s nearly the same than the pre-war BMW R71. The main difference is the engine. The R71 doesn´t have overhead valves. This engine is called "Seitenventiler" (side-valves). This one is the R71:

This engine was so famous, that even Harley-Davidson copied it in the 40th.

I would like to buy a BMW R71, but I can´t afford it. :'(

The cheapest alternative to the R71 is the russian K750. I´ve paid 650,-$ for it. Millions of them were built and spare parts are cheap. The only disadvantage of the russian bikes is the unbelievale awful quality of the russian material. :-/

On these picture you can see my russian monster:

At least there are photos from a biker meeting point at a ferry at river Elbe. My wife an I often ride there after work. There you can meet really old guys with really old cows. :)

Those are great photos of your Russian "Monster", Dirk! Fantastic!!  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I lived in a small town in SC by the name of Abbeville in 1999-2000, and while I was there, there was a small motorcycle shop in town that just happened to be the east coast distributor for Ural motorcycles!  He had about a dozen of them in his shop, some with sidecars.  Really cool looking machines!  I wish I could have afforded to buy one back then!

John, If you're really interested in the Urals, there is still a dealer in Rock Hill, SC - Hager Cycle World.  :)
Willville (my favorite MC only campground in Virginia!) has an annual gathering of Urals.  They are true enthusiasts.

Dirk, I LOVE the look of the old /2s.  And now I've learned something new about the "Seitenventiler".  I would love to own a nice restored /2 that I felt good about actually riding.  I wouldn't have any trouble reaching the ground on one of those!  There's a fellow in the Charlotte BMW club that still rides his /2.  (At least the last time I saw him he was.)

Thanks for sharing all the wonderful photos!  Never knew Harley did a copy of a BMW, either...
