Oil Filter

Went to my local BMW dealership (Victory BMW, Chandler, Arizona) to get an oil filter change kit for the R65. I walked out without my oil filter. Nobody could find a part number for the long hinged filter, had I known that this would have happened, I would have made sure that I had the part number with me. What a sorry state BMW dealers have gotten to , that they can't supply common items for older bikes!

Hi Bob,

the correct item-number is

11 00 9 056 145

the item is listed in the parts catalogue as "repair-kit oilfilter" (chart-no #00001094) and brings all the sealing gaskets needed. But, attention! BMW did change the order and type of the gaskets several times and all possible parts can be found in the box. So it is advisable to mark or write down which gasket was used and in which order it was set in your specific ride when taking out the old filter.

Stopped by the local independent BMW shop today, and got the last filter kit they had in stock. Looks like I need to stock up on them in the future.

I order my filters from Eurotech, they are Hahle and they are the OEM mfg. to BMW and the only difference is no BMW logo but still have the OX35 and OX36 part number markings.  Seems they were $12 something each...  I mentioned this price and manufacturer to my local dealer, as he was gouging me a $20 bill (with tax) for JUST THE OIL FILTER (trying to at least get him to come down to Chi. BMW's price) and he just kinda grunted, said it was a good price.  I immediately went home and ordered a half dozen...

The shim very rarely wears out, ditto for the crush washer, and the white O-ring is good for at least two changes (in my opinion) so I just buy bare filters and keep a stock of the white O-rings on hand.  No sense in paying for crap you ain't gonna use.

Ditto on the shim ring.  I don't remember the last time I changed it.  I have been gun-shy ever since I squished my large o-ring a few years ago, and I replace it with the filter.  I haven't gotten brave enough to change the filter every-other oil change, like a lot of folks do, either.

I ordered a few shims and O-Rings to have on hand. Guess I'll order up some filters from Chicago BMW to have on hand as well. Bob, at what independent shop did you find the kit. I'm not aware of any shops around here other than Victory and Discount over in Tempe.
