I bought my R65 like this one (same color) in 1984. It sat unused in the dealer showroom for two years (made in 1982) and at that time BMW offered an option to mount an RT fairing on these unsold R65.
Two main differences where the lack of the two gloves compartment between the fairing and the tank, and a plastic plaque at the lower triple tree clamp instead of the two rubber boots. (the brake lines where at the same R65 position of the others R65, and I bet modifying the routing to match the other RT bikes would have been too costly).
I removed the fairing to return to the naked bike for her 30th birthday in order to ease her old days a bit. At that occasion I discovered that the big red battery cable going to the starter motor from the battery was badly worn out by rubbing at the spacer under the tank holding the two big fairing parts to the frame. A local BMW guru told me it was the major cause for fire on these bikes...
