Head shave and new exhaust valve seat
« on: January 06, 2020, 01:35:04 PM »
So last summer my right hand valve cover was leaking oil, and double, silicone, or double silicone gaskets didn't fix the problem.

I searched out a head specialist here in Austin and had him give it the once over.  He found the face was wavy and remarked it was an unusual problem.  He also said the exhaust valve seat was very worn and repaired that as well.

Who was the specialist in Austin? I guess they knew what they were doing and you're happy with their work?

It is amazing how warped the valve cover mating surface can get
It is also just amazing how well  it seals up After it is machined
The plan old stock gasket works just fine even after it has been reused

I have reason to believe that my gaskets are original and therefore 40 years old.  They never leak a drop even with very moderate torque on the nuts.  Actually I think that's the reason they don't leak.

He seemed very knowledgeable and came recommended from the suspension tuner / air head mechanic here as well.

I believe that the exhaust valve seat was deformed, and he did find a warp where I suspected there was one.

Won't really know how good the work is until I put it back together, but I'm waiting on rings from motobins.  Hopefully will have them in the next week or two, and back together by the end of January.

Surprising to me, I've used the stock gaskets and had them break after a few uses.  Could be a different material, or over torque as you say.
