Krauser 25L pannier repair -plastic welding/hinges
« on: October 25, 2019, 11:48:35 AM »
Hi all, One of the panniers that came with my bike had a big crack in the lid. I plastic welded it, but due to too much heat spread it looked awful  :-[

So I found another pannier with knackered locks and a well-worn mounting area (vibrated to death).

To get the hinges off and to be re-usable. They are an interlocking design and have had solvent welding in a few places. They cannot be separated without destroying them or cleanly cutting the hinge from the interlocking part.. To remove, use a Dremel cutoff disc right along the centre at 90 degrees to the pannier opening. The depth has to be about 20mm. Each hing will then pop out of it's slot.

To re-fix - use Polypropelene welding rods, a hot air gun with a small nozzle and ideally set to about 320C. Use heat shielding (aluminium or other plates) taped where you don't want to melt. Assemble the hinges, close the pannier tight and weld away. Hopefully the pic shows the result. It is at the back, behind and unseen on the bike. Very strong.
