'79 Clutch Cable Routing

Gentlemen:

Could anyone provide a routing diagram, photos or proper explanation on how the clutch cable goes (past) the crash-pad, along the frame tube?

In earlier post, I questioned if these are "original" bars. Currently, the clutch cable seems to make a very abrupt curve, routing under the crash pad. This would put undue stress on the cable near the clutch lever.

The crash-pad (dash-pad) has been chopped up (see photo) to accomodate the windscreen mounts, so I am unsure of the original configuration. The pad is split at both gauge sections (blue circle).

The clutch cable route on a 79 with the low euro bars is no problem at all but bikes with the higher rise US bars do have a bend in the cable.

The bars in that photo don't look like standard bars of either type.  You need to find a photo of a bike with US bars to see how they compare.

The handle bars are not OEM, they are causing this issue, the high bars and the low bars of the LS version bikes have the left 'perch ' alot farther back for the point where the handle bar starts to go down to the clamp area .

You have to drill a hole thru the dash pad
Use a Unibit  It will make a nice clean hole
Your pad is already hacked on
But your bars are very narrow and the cable may still make a hard bend
You need to find a way to do it with out the sharp bend
Or you  will quickly wear your cable

This is what I did when I installed  BMW RT bars on mine

You could try and find some extra long cable that may cross all the way over to the other side but it may cause other problems then

Thanks for the replies, guys. I began to think the bars were not oem after comparing various photos online.

Looks like drilling into the pad will be the next step.
