R65 Instrument Housing
« on: January 19, 2019, 05:37:31 AM »
Hi All-

I’m new to this site, happy to find it after the purchase of an ‘81 R65.

I am in need for a new/slightly used instrument housing (unit surrounding the speedo and tach).  Mine is shot, and I am having difficulty locating one. Any one have one for sale or suggestions on where to purchase?

Thanks for the help!!

Are you talking about what you see from the front - the piece that surrounds the instruments, the switch, etc?
If it's that, they are becoming difficult to find.  I'm not sure if you'd be able to find a new one and it would be expensive if you did.
I see them on ebay, prices range from okay to ridiculous.
One problem with these is that they are soft plastic/rubber covering foam and used ones are often cracked, either from weathering or cracked in the thinner, flexible spots.
I don't mean to sound discouraging, just to let you know what you're up against.
They'll pop up on ebay, sometimes for a decent price but you just need to check frequently. A lot of people that chop up bikes or change to modern instruments will get rid of these.

Mrclubike, I checked with Max BMW, the fellow with whom I spoke stated they didn’t have any.  Do you happen to know that they in fact do still have them?  Did you speak with them recently? I might be desperate enough to pay it..

Hello,
BMW has them. Available.
 HUB CAP LOWER  1236297   €30.50
 HUB CAP UPPER   1236896   €339.17
And I bet you'll pay a bit more in the US to accommodate the shipping and tax...
Maybe your dealer could order them for you ?

There are many parts that will show a price on the BMW sites but aren't actually available.   And it appears that all of the dealers in the US access the same database when they search for things they don't have in their own stock.
Several times I've called various ones looking for things and they all give me the exact same answers - "BMW shows 9 left, we can get it for you but it'll have to come from Germany".

I've ordered parts no longer available in North America, from a local dealer .
Took about 2 weeks and at least in my cases, no shipping charges were added .
Orders shipped out of the EU are not sibject to VAT .

BMW have always been spectacularly good at keeping parts for older bikes, I believe that in more recent years they have had a positive direction to actually increase their inventory of parts for "heritage" machines.

I have fond memories of when, in the early 90s we needed a new side stand for the the wife's 79 R65.

Now as some of you are aware the 79/80 R65 has a number of parts that are unique to those models, and one of the parts that is unique is the side stand.

The Australian importer was able to tell us they had nil stock but they were also able to tell us that BMW Germany also had nil stock, but that they were able to see that BMW Germany had placed an order with the OEM foundry for 5 stands and that when they were made one would be sent to us.

It took a while, but in due course the stand arrived (albeit at an eye-watering cost).

So m,y take would be that if you really want the instrument surround - place the order and see if BMW Germany can scare one up.
