« on: July 13, 2018, 10:51:13 PM »
Hi there - a friend has a totalled diode board on his 1977 R100s. I have a second hand one from my 1984 R65 - will it be suitable for his  bike.

I potted my diode board in epoxy almost 20 years ago and (knocking on wood) never had any issues.  I remember marveling at the service manual cautions about accidentally grounding it when removing the front engine cover.  Really? They'd leave something that important so vulnerable? I considered gluing some form of dielectric, even cardboard, to the top of it to prevent such, then just decided to pot the damn thing altogether against all elements.  I was slightly worried about any heat retention effects on the life of the diodes but this many miles later it seems to be just fine.

I've often wondered about that as well Svejkovat.  It's one of the first things I learned about removing the cover and can't understand why they didn't come up with some way to insulate something in that area to keep the short from happening.
