Sudden Shutting Off
« on: July 14, 2018, 08:04:38 PM »
Given my work schedule I haven't been riding as much as I usually do. I get out maybe every other weekend for a ride so it has been siting in the garage a lot.

I decided to take her out today, temps in the mid 90*F. New plugs and wires in the last 6 months, oil change, valves adjusted and carbs sync'd in the last 3 months. Full tank of non-ethanol gasoline. Starts up after 2-3 seconds of cranking, settles to an idle after a few minutes. Pulls smoothly and comes to an idle at stops no problem.

After about an hour and a half I got stuck in some stop and go traffic in a construction area and while slowing coming up behind traffic it just stopped, as quickly as if the ignition was turned off. Pulled in the clutch and hit the starter and it instantly started. Over the next 15-20 minutes it happened two more times and hitting the starter it started instantly, no cranking to get it going.

Then a cloud opened up and I pulled into a closed gas station and waited under the cover for 20 minutes with several other riders until it let up. Started up and rode home without an other incident.

Any ideas or suggestions? Is it something to be concerned about?

Ii had this happen over a few years, the engine cutout, then came back with a loud bang .
I was told to go over all the electrical connections on the bike, look for loose or pushed pins in the connectors .
I found a few suspect pins in a few connectors .
This was in 1997, has not happened since .
