Deformed Oil FIlter

I finally got around to doing my annual service today. 3623 miles ago I replaced the oil filter. When I removed it I found the misshapen object as shown in the photo.

I have heard that our motors generate very high oil pressures, but I need to know is this OK or should I be concerned.  I replaced it with the 2 part "bendy" type filter which I believe will be more resistant to the forces generated. What do you all think??

Apparently this does happen and it always seems to be the one piece type
It is believed to be cause by high oil pressure from thick oil
and or possibly being  crushed  from the ends  when the cover is installed and an extra square cut O'ring is left in the the filter housing
I personally think it is from to thick of oil on cold start  up 

I ride in temps from the upper 30's  all the way up above 100 F and have never had this problem
I do run synthetic 20w50 oil and 2 piece filters

I've run the R65 under -10°C. And never had this problem even if i use 20W50 oil all year long. (I use the bike everyday, rain or shine. The only rest she got is when I'm on vacation and/or snow)).
Maybe your filter maker was a poor one ? And the filter was sub-standard ?
I do stick to the Malhe/Knecht filters. (apparently, Knecht is/was bought by Mahle ? So both are the very same).

Airhead filters have being getting crushed occasionally for 40 years. I had this happen just the once 8 years ago and it did no harm. Oil will have bypassed the filter which it does on every cold start anyway. I wouldn't worry about it or feel the need to use only two part filters.

Obviously high oil pressure when cold is to blame but I also believe filter length on installation can pre-dispose a filter to collapse by kinking the pleats. Oil pressure can't crush a metal tube full of holes without first folding the filter media flat so keeping the pleats straight by ensuring there is no undue axial compression is critical.  I now do a trial insertion of the filter without the $2000 O ring fitted to gauge how much compression is being produced on the filter end seals. In one case I had to shorten the end seals to make the filter fit correctly.

Bizarre as it may seem there are a few reports of the two part filter collapsing.

I use the bendy.  Never a problem.  At the moment I have the WIX Bendy in it.
